Definatly Half-Life for me. The flawless combination of physics and shooting allows for fantastic gameplay. It doesnt sacrifice game-play for story or vice-versa (to quote Yatzee) and it has really great pacing.

You know? No matter how hard I tried, I just can't get into Team Fortress 2. I can never find a class that I like, and I simply don't like the whole "Team" aspect. I also never quite got into COD4 either, although I almost did once I started treating it like Halo and swapping out my crappy weapons for the awesome ones that my enemies have. Unfortune I got Halo 2 and 3 soon afterwards, and I stopped playing COD4 all together.

Hey, does Gears of War 2 count as an FPS? If so then I'm definitely putting that one out there! Actually, it's been a while since I last played Gears 2, maybe I sould play some tomorrow, and try to finish up the campaign.

Half-Life 2 the "granddaddy" of all FPS's? You're either very young or only recently started playing video games. The really granddaddies of FPS's are Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. They started the genre. Half-Life 1 pulled it out of the hum-drum corridor shooter shtick and turned the genre towards more narrative ideals. .
Just because you start a genre doesn't make your videogame automatically better than something that came out later(I never implied Half Life INVENTED FPS) and it's because of the story and pacing that make it better than generic shoot em ups

A non-existent game is your favorite FPS?

CS:S is probably my favorite. It's just pure fun and there are so many different gamemods to play.

Well if were going on "most hours of life spent attempting to get every unlockable and angering friends" then I would have to say GoldenEye 64. If not then Bioshock or Half Life 2.

What Do You Think Is The Best FPS Out There?
Welcome to the Escapist.

Bioshock. Maybe Fallout 3. Everyone seems to love it but i'm yet to play it. It's sitting on the shelf, screaming play me.

Quake 2, Halo,Blood,Duke 3D, Unreal Gold(one with exspantion),Unreal tournament,Half Life, Turok 1-3(despite 3 being broken), Dues ex, System Shock,Halo 1 and only 1, Time splitters was fun as well.

Most newer games are filled with so many issues they simply lose their shine and become just another game.

HL2 is an ok game the levels are large but kinda bland the ending to 1 sucks , story wise its better than most but the weapons feel off and resulting game just feels off.

Bioshock/FO3 is under developed and unfinished from rushing it to market.

Unreal. No other FPS has come close to the atmospheric music, the unique and awesome weaponry and of course, the ability to type in the cheat to fly around the levels.

I'm somewhat disappointed no one has made a smart-ass comment about FPS being Frames Per Second, rather than First Person Shooter, but oh well. Oh, and System Shock 2 and Half Life 2 ftw.

Halo 3. The best online multiplayer on the 'box yet; if only because if you suck you will be beaten around the head with a lampost, unlike COD where any retard can get 10 kills in a game of team deathmatch. Left 4 Dead comes somewhere close behind halo, though.

Sigh... all these mentions of Bioshock is making me sad. It was a decent game, sure, definately not the "best ever"

Half-life, the original. You can't take down a classic.

At the time of release, Halo: Combat Evolved was the best FPS ever and I think his good-but-not-great sequels made this amazing game really bad public relations for no reason (well, its stupid fanboys might have something to do with it too...)

"Multiplayerly" speaking, Call of Duty 4.

tl;dr

might start a flame war but I'm still really impressed with Killzone 2, and it's the most fun I've had with a blockbuster game in a really long time. Satisfying, pretty, what more do you want from an FPS? Also, the online play has me up all night.

Battlezone 2; not really an FPS, more of a FPS/RTS hybrid but close enough. Or TS2
