Timesplitters Future Perfect, what other game did you get to kill gingerbread men, dinosaurs, evil clowns with a shotgun or a laser rifle, or a bat?
In what other game could you defend a fortress on Mars against a legion of bears wearing red hats and vests using only a dartgun that makes the enemies inflate then pop?

In what other game could you go on a rampage slaughtering cowboys, monkeys, squids, snowmen on magic carpets, future soldiers, and ninjas all at once with a minigun?

In what other game can you rig the ENTIRE MAP to explode?

In what other game can you stand on the roof of a desert Mission picking off zombie chimps with a missile launcher?

That game is the SHIT.

Far Cry 2, it's also the best game i've ever played.

But, people, let us not forget another great series. A series based on stealth and hand-to-hand combat. Yes, i'm talking about riddick. Who remembers it?

When it comes to fun Counter-Strike Source wins for me.

I can't really think of many FPS's I consider "good" but that's because I'm not the FPS guy.

Mirrors Edge. Story was trying to be too many things at once, gameplay was innovative, and definitely a fresh look at the FPS genre.

Huh?.... Mirrors Edge wasn't a FPS, you got the first peron thing right, but a shooter? Ok, I know you can use a gun, but come on. Its a Free Runner minus the free part.

I think the best FPS would probably have to the Half-Life series.

Well, Portal technically has a gun and is first person, and one of the best game ever made :p

Out of the 'real' shooter games, I'd pick Bioshock, with Half-Life 2 a VERY close second. I know Half-Life is technically the better shooter (shooting in Bioshock was boring and poorly done), but I thought the Plasmids were a great idea (what other shooter allows you to fling HORNETS at your enemy?) and the overall story and setting of Bioshock appealed to more then HL's.

Modern Warfare is a honorable mention for it's incredible atmosphere, but I generally don't like games set in real-world wars. It just feels boring und unimaginative to me.

Finally someone who understands it's awesome. Actually not many people know of it at all it seems, I say Timesplitters and then kicked in the balls for mentioning a FPS that was a console game. It was amazing and maybe one day people will see how awesome it is. I mean come on, when the enemy displayed the hero and said "kill this guy" he was in leopard skin undies flexing.

I can't pick one, so I'll name my top 3:

1. F.E.A.R. - Great (albeit disturbing) story, great gameplay, and devent multiplayer

2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - less bugs than the original, immersive, fun to just run aruond and explore.

3. Tribes 2 - SHAZBOT! Need I say more?

I remember Riddick! That game was AMAZING and yet it kinda flew under the radar. The good news is that they are making another one!

Honestly I like Counter Strike source, sure it doesn't have the best graphics, but its gameplay is superb and the concept is simple:

Stop the enemy force from reaching there objectives or simply eliminate them...

Halo: CE

Know what, I agree with you. Halo CE was the shit. HAlf-Life 2 was good when it came out, but it hasn't aged well. Oh look, another see-saw puzzle.

Fuck you all heathens.
It's time splitters 2

Oh and meroid prime. And before the twats complain it's not an FPS, let me save you from snorting through your pedantic nostrils. Remember, you shoot things, It's in a first person perspective. Therefore it's an FPS.

Oh and for god's sake bioshock isn't a fucking RPG!!!!!!

Deus Ex, Stalker: SoC, System Shock, Portal, Quake, Quake 2, Counterstrike.

Notable mentions to Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life for breaking new ground.

^Same

It's easily my favorite genre, and I'll play just about any FPS I can get my hands on (there have been quite a few). As far as gameplay, visuals, and realism goes. CoD:4 is my favorite. Next on the list would be Bioshock. I know quite a few people didn't care much for it, but there was something about it that just sucked me into it. I had difficulty turning it off to take a break once I started it. The environment, solid controls, and mild creepiness made for some excellent immersion.
Please, please do not use the words 'COD4' and 'Realism' in the same forum topic, unless you're pointing out the lack thereof.

My favorite FPS of all time... Operation Flashpoint.
Pfft... Don't even try to tell me that games like Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six, and other tactical shooters are somehow superior due to "realism". Sure, you have squad command, realistic scenarios, tactics (most of the time. online is another story) and none of that "suppressors and telescopic sights hinder range and accuracy" nonsense, but you're taking all of those realistic elements and enjoying them through a character that has the motor skills of a 60s robot crab. The sound and visuals are almost always bland and generic. All these self defeating elements take your realism and shove it down your throat while screaming "You're still just playing a soldier sim!"

No... Call of Duty isn't perfect as far as realism goes (anybody who has played for more than a minute on regular team deathmatch could tell you that), but the games that are- or to be more accurate- try to be generally suck in every other category to the point that they cross that line that separates enjoyable gaming and cheap/boring simulations. Call of Duty: 4 finds that happy medium and excels in every category making it a perfectly balanced breakfast.
Operation Flashpoint was released in 2001, back when 1024 x 768 was a great achievement in terms of resolution. And it renders at any one time an area larger than any COD map. Yeah, the characters were clunky, the vehicles even more so... but it didn't detract from the experience of those who knew how to enjoy. The great thing about realistic shooters for me, is that they are unforgiving. One wrong step, and more likely than not, you're dead (And there's not checkpoints every two minutes). They become tactical puzzles, causing you to think and be cautious, and very rewarding when you get it right.

I still popped in Operation Flashpoint for a go at the three campaigns last year. I think that is a testament to the game's quality.

Gods, only one person mentioned Deus Ex? Wow... That was a pretty impressive and complicated game that tried something new and different and it's a simple footnote. :(
I was the only one? Really? Hmmm...

Half Life 2 is certainly the granddaddy of all FPS games it has a well crafted dystopian world which ties in believable characters that are hard not to care about. Also I can't think of many FPS games where vehicles are not annoying
Half-Life 2 the "granddaddy" of all FPS's? You're either very young or only recently started playing video games. The really granddaddies of FPS's are Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. They started the genre. Half-Life 1 pulled it out of the hum-drum corridor shooter shtick and turned the genre towards more narrative ideals. Deus Ex changed it again by having a very strong RPG feel. Those are the real granddaddies of FPS's.

GoldenEye. Came on the heels of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, and was far more complex (without being annoying).
I'll agree. Partially. Goldeneye is the definitive console shooter. There's no question about it. There'd be no Halo without Goldeneye. However, I must say that many PC shooters, before or since, have been better. It's not Goldeneye's fault, it's just the limitations of consoles (control type aside).

Ever hear of punctuation? It really helps with sentence structure. It's easy too! All you need to do is reach down with your right ring finger. Just move it down from L to that period. The exclamation point and question mark are a bit more complicated, but I think you can figure it out.

That's tough, but for me it's either Call of Duty 4 or Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.
