It's easily my favorite genre, and I'll play just about any FPS I can get my hands on (there have been quite a few). As far as gameplay, visuals, and realism goes. CoD:4 is my favorite. Next on the list would be
Bioshock. I know quite a few people didn't care much for it, but there was something about it that just sucked me into it. I had difficulty turning it off to take a break once I started it. The environment, solid controls, and mild creepiness made for some excellent immersion.
Please, please do not use the words 'COD4' and 'Realism' in the same forum topic, unless you're pointing out the lack thereof.
My favorite FPS of all time... Operation Flashpoint.
Pfft... Don't even try to tell me that games like Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six, and other tactical shooters are somehow superior due to "realism". Sure, you have squad command, realistic scenarios, tactics (most of the time. online is another story) and none of that "suppressors and telescopic sights hinder range and accuracy" nonsense, but you're taking all of those realistic elements and enjoying them through a character that has the motor skills of a 60s robot crab. The sound and visuals are almost always bland and generic. All these self defeating elements take your realism and shove it down your throat while screaming "You're still just playing a soldier sim!"
No... Call of Duty isn't perfect as far as realism goes (anybody who has played for more than a minute on regular team deathmatch could tell you that), but the games that are- or to be more accurate-
try to be generally suck in every other category to the point that they cross that line that separates enjoyable gaming and cheap/boring simulations. Call of Duty: 4 finds that happy medium and excels in every category making it a perfectly balanced breakfast.
