Im going to say that while all of the game mentioned above are good games, none of them can really be called the best FPS because there are some golden oldies that I would put above them.

Original AvP would be mine, the one and only game that has ever made me come close to messing my pants, and the one and only game I know that actually makes you feel tense every time the motion tracker pings, every time your about to pounce on an unsuspecting victim and every time you get spotted as your about to vaporise some poor soldiers head. Class game, never been beaten for atmosphere.

I hate the fact the hating halo 3 has become mainstream and more often than not its just someone saying OMGS I HATEZORS DA HALO 3 and they have no followup arguments at all i was pleasantly surprised at this thread and im going to go with halo 3 multiplayer and some of the campaign although lacking in story was freaking epic nothing quite beats ramping a warthog onto a scarab while theres another one shooting at you and the multiplayer has a nice feel to it easy to learn very difficult to master but i like metroid prime/prime 2's singleplayer better but for an overall favorite i would say halo 3 and instead of a flame shield i will go with i will listen to your arguments it wont change my opinion most likely but i dont mind debating about it but if its just your opinion and your going to say halo sucks based on your opinion its a waste of time for you and your acomplishing nothing

GoldenEye. Came on the heels of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, and was far more complex (without being annoying).

Mirrors Edge. Story was trying to be too many things at once, gameplay was innovative, and definitely a fresh look at the FPS genre.
It's not really an FPS it's more an action/ adventure with guns.

I say Halo 1 is the best.
Isn't that what most FPS's are?

I would have to say the original Deus Ex, because it was a lot more than a FPS.

This thread is pretty much sure to have been done before, but I'll throw out here early on:
Half-Life 2.
Physics, story, pacing, characterization, fun, etc. are all unparalleled.

I honestly haven't seen a good or at least average fps in the last 2 years
You seem to have set your standards too high or have a seriously skewed quality scale.

Or just no longer like shooters.

Or are heavily weighing multiplayer in your ideal concept of an FPS.

Or are just being nonconformist (remember, everyone is being different for the sake of being different, don't follow their example)

Or you just don't like using a PS3 controller for shooters and don't realize (and Resistance just reminded of some old shooter you loved profoundly)

Anyway, sounds to me like you could do with several months of playing games like GalCiv 2 and Empire: Total War (great games mind, and a long time with them will make you appreciate twitchy action again)
wow...

let me make one thing clear, i love the total war and civilization games, they never dissapoint. I still play Rome total war every now and then because of it's near perefction, the only thing holding it down is the fact that we can't play as factions like Scythia, Armenia, Pontus, Numidia, Spain, Thrace, and Dacia

ok maybe calling every fps garbge in the last 2 years is a little unfair, but i'm not kidding when i say all of them are uninnovative, they're just grapical upgrades of the prequels with all the things i loved about them removed. I thought R:FOM was the last good fps because it blasted realism into the sun; it provided creative weapons like the Hailstorm, Splitter, Laark, Auger, and Sapper. it featured creative multiplayer modes like Meltdown, Breach, and Assault.

control wise and bear with me....greg hasting's tournament paintball. both games. The game has a spirnt button, multiple direction lean feature with a decent control of that that when done right lets you only poke out as much of your body as you want. Toggle crouch and ability to go prone. even a casual look to the sides feature without turning your whole body. now take those controls and put it into a normal fps combat setting like cod and such and add a grenade button and weapon switch and you would have a pretty nicely set up game. for consoles no less :D

edit: needed to add that for story and such i tend to compare almost all modern fps to halo with halo 3 being my favorite of the series.
