The Best: Resistance: Fall of Man
The Worst: Resistance 2
Irony...

CoD4 had a good campaign, but multiplayer was noob friendly unbalanced crap where every single one of my deaths were attributed to a UAV, airstrike, or chopper. it's ironic i hate it because like R2 i was one of the more dominant players but still couldn't stand playing it

Killzone 2 is crap

Bioshock is overrated

Other good ones are portal and Fallout 3

I honestly haven't seen a good or at least average fps in the last 2 years

True but I'm not sure that it can be called a true FPS it's more like a Platformer with FPS elements.
Hence the subgenre. It's a hard thing to classify genres anyway.

Say with Portal; it could be called an FPP and be in that FPS subgenre which is itself a subgenre of shooters which are themselves a subgenre of action which is itself a subgenre of personal (a game in which you directly control a person). But it's definitely a puzzle game and puzzle games are usually considered impersonal.

It's a convoluted mess, not unlike
(it just felt appropriately random)

Those two, Postal 2 with the A Week in Paradise mod installed though so you can play the full 7 day week straight through with a ton of new weapons. Marks off on the mod because it makes the game a bit crashy, not too bad though.

You seem to have set your standards too high or have a seriously skewed quality scale.

Or just no longer like shooters.

Or are heavily weighing multiplayer in your ideal concept of an FPS.

Or are just being nonconformist (remember, everyone is being different for the sake of being different, don't follow their example)

Or you just don't like using a PS3 controller for shooters and don't realize (and Resistance just reminded of some old shooter you loved profoundly)

Anyway, sounds to me like you could do with several months of playing games like GalCiv 2 and Empire: Total War (great games mind, and a long time with them will make you appreciate twitchy action again)

Half-Life 2.
Physics, story, pacing, characterization, fun, etc. are all unparalleled.
Agreed...I actually put it at the top of my "best games" list, too.

Timesplitters Future Perfect, what other game did you get to kill gingerbread men, dinosaurs, evil clowns with a shotgun or a laser rifle, or a bat?

Or maybe Team Fortress 2, what other game gets awesome updates for free now a days?
GMOD,CS:S,DoD:S,etc.
Yes but now you're fighting valve games with valve games, that makes me confused and need guidance. Oh hell Doom for the sega genesis's 32X, it's the best version because it has blast processing (I know it's the worst version)
you know the old saying fight fire with fire
But that's like trying to fight with the same fire that's on the same torch, I mean sure it's a nice torch but how do you get that going? You'd have to separate it but then that's ruining a good thing.
whatever i give up

you win

ill just go play Gmod :)

Timesplitters: Future Perfect because of the silly campaign, the ridiculously high roster of selectable characters in multiplayer (wtf with 150?) and the ridiculous characters (again wtf with Teeth Mummy? Ninja Monkey? Time to unleash the asskickulator?)
In addition, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the really intense action and setpieces.

Bioshock: Its steampunk, its deep, and it is hell of a lot of fun. Did I mention the bee shooting? Yeah, you can shoot bees.

'puts on old man suit'

All these young'uns and their new fang-dangled shooters with their billions of polygons and specular lighting shaders. A few sprites and an animated hand holding your gun, that's all you need!

One can't simply point to one single "best FPS ever". There's never truly been one perfect game, but there have been quite a few FPS's that have paved the way for all others since.

Doom - though not the first FPS, it essentially cemented the genre in gaming.

Quake - set the model by which most multiplayer or online shooters adhere to today. it's list of game modes from deathmatch, team deathmatch, ctf, etc, are industry staples.

Half-Life - set the standard of narrative by which all decent FPS's are made. it was a near perfect example of how well gameplay and story could be blended together seamlessly and continues that tradition today

Goldeneye 007 - basically defined what and how a console FPS should be made. tight controls, insanely addictive split-screen multiplayer and a passable story mode.

System Shock 2 & Deus Ex - prime examples of how best to blend FPS gameplay with RPG like story telling and exploration. without games like these, there'd be no Bioshocks

Portal, Metroid Prime, Mirror's Edge, and a few too many to list - there's been only a few in this last list. some critically successful, some not, but the one thing they all share is that they showed that the first person shooter genre isn't limited to just running and gunning through corridors or just about killing nazis, cyborgs, or aliens. They showed that the FPS genre can be original, creative, endearing, and above all, ground-breaking.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure this thread's been done to death. Please try refraining from inundating the forum with "what's the best ****" or "which is better?" threads.

Gods, only one person mentioned Deus Ex? Wow... That was a pretty impressive and complicated game that tried something new and different and it's a simple footnote. :(

Call of Duty 4 I'd say...Then again Bioshock and Half Life are pretty damn good too. You can't chose the "best" FPS. They're all awesome!
