Portal is my favorite game that I got free on Steam because of a promotion for Portal 2 that lasted a weekend. It's a classic and though I played and beat it I didn't own a copy myself until Steam decided to give it to me.

I also got Final Fantasy VIII for free because a kid I know didn't want it anymore and just handed it right over to me.

Probably Bastion, which was very generously gifted to me on Steam by an awesome friend of mine for the holidays. There's also Portal, technically an even better game, which I managed to snag on Steam during one of the times when it was free, but that hardly counts since I already had it on the PS3 as part of The Orange Box.

If presents count, then it'd be Pokemon Red for Gameboy. :3 When I was a kid, my parents handed me my first console ever a Gameboy. I was so over joyed, I didn't think about needing a game, then they handed me Pokemon Red. Such a great memory.

If gifts don't count, then... ummm... I guess the free American Mcgee's Alice that came with my copy of Alice Madness returns, as that's the only game I've ever gotten free.

I got the World of Warcraft Battlechest, and an upgrade to Wrath of the Lich King & Cataclysm, all because no one wanted to be/ was good at being a healer.
Definitely the best free game(s) I've ever received.

I managed to get Crysis 1 on PS3 for free through a code scavenger hunt on another website.

That spaceship blew my fucking mind.

(Now if only they went with a wheel to select suit modes instead of making it work like Crysis 2. You walk really slow without having maximum speed on passively)

Definitely the Dota 2 beta, enjoying it tons, team fortress 2 is also a great game but I technically didn't get it for free, I bought it back when it cost money.

Probably this twisted metal rip off for the PS1. I don't really remember the name of it any more but you were able to unlock and alien saucer as a playable character it was a lot of fun.
I remember playing a game just like that, it was called Vigilante 8 I'm pretty sure, that was an awesome game.

Remember Net Yaroze? Yep... they were the best free games ever given on a demo disk with playstation magazines...! Noteworthy was Rocks and Gems, Net Yaroze Soccer (I will never forget all the rip off team names!! It had about 100 teams if my memory served correctly, all with the official line-ups at the time, but all the names had been very slightly changed to avoid copyright... I will always remember Minchester Utd versus Luverpool...! :p) and the one which involved saving babys from shosts... but I can't remember the name! :|

EDIT: Blitter Boy... that was it... It was a shoot em up which only included non traditional weaponry that could only hurt ghosts, but was pretty fun, and very colourful!
Oh. My. God. I had totally forgotten about Net Yaroze!

Absolutely loved those games - I remember that Official Playstation magazine disc that came with like 20 free titles to try! Think there was a future/sci-fi shooter that I spent quite a while playing through on that disc - as well as Blitter Boy and Net Yaroze Soccer, of course!
I have to say... as a kid they were great! They had shit graphics, but they were so simple they worked brilliantly. Scraping the bottom of my memory I remember there were 14 on the same disc as the MGS1 demo... this was the most played disc in the history of my PSX!

Yaroze Soccer was soo funny too! All the weird animations, and that all of your players ran at the same speed in formation... it worked well though... the mid way point between fifa games and table football!

There were quite a few maze games too.. probably born out of the obsession of 3D maze games on Windows95 at the time. Remember that screensaver where you watched a computer going thorough random generated mazes, hitting rats and stuff... crazy!

There was one maze game called 'The Incredible Coneman' who had to collect all the cones on the level! He moved so damn slow, and the music was one funky basline playing over and over again... to this day that bassline will randomly fall into my head! :|

I also remember a racing game that took place in a 3D psycodelic tube, and a top down gorey shooter that was also 2 player!

OH! And Terra Incognito (Don't ask how I remember that name! :S) which was the 3d platforming game, that was so disorientating it was practically impossible to play!

That's all the ones I remember...
Terra Incognito! That was actually pretty good - except for camera angles and controls - but it really was a user-built 3D platformer that kept me going for a few hours. I remember thinking that was quite epic at the time!

And yes - it was the demo disc with MGS1 - I had just bought Metal Gear and so was disappointed that the main demo on the disc was a game I already had - but the Net Yaroze demos (and possibly Cool Boarders and Devil Dice) really made up for that!

Ah..... Metal Gear 1.... How I've missed you....

And to relive those joys..... - http://eclectic-review.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/video-metal-gear-awesome-150312-daily.html

My Uncle bought me Final Fantasy VII because my parents couldn't afford it.

Best. Uncle. Ever.

My uncle bought me F-Zero X and Conker's Bad Fur day :D
Gamer uncles are fucking awesome.

I think my favorite free game would be F-Zero X. Nintendo giving me Metroid Fusion and Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, is pretty damn awesome.

Nintendo: "Because you bought a 3DS on the first day it was released, we are going to give you a bunch of sweet games to show how much we appreciate you!"
Me: "Aww thanks Nintendo! You shouldn't have :D"
Nintendo: "We'll also give you a free attachment for the 3DS because we know how uncomfortable it can be at times"
Me: "Wow really? Thanks!"

And people wonder why I am a Nintendo fanboy.

Say what you will about the game, but I thought Halo Reach was pretty epic. Getting that for free on disc was fantastic, especially since it came from Microsoft. Then, once the disc became obsolete and they allowed me to download it directly, it was even better. I still enjoy playing it, and it was free.

I remember Humble Indie Bundle 3 being my favorite so far. I paid money for it, yes. However, I was only really buying it for Braid, Machinarium and Revenge of the Titans.
I fell in love with Hammerfight, finally got the full version of Crayon Physics, and I'm still really oddly intrigued by Atom Zombie Smasher. The developer for that game is... strange, though I can't help but love the style.

I grabbed Portal for free when Valve was doing their Portal-as-an-education-tool thing, so that's good.

My little brother bought me Skyrim for christmas, so from my end it was free.

Alien Swarm is a really good free game that I happen to be really terrible at.

There's a few others, I may edit this post as I think of more.

L.A. Noire :)

Friend of mine gifted me a copy on Steam whilst I was at work, cause it was on some ridiculous sale about three days after it came out on PC and I couldn't get home in time.
He has since declined my paying him back too :)

if christmas/Birthday gifts count then OoT

other than that the 3DS ambassador thing they did was a pretty sweet way of apologizing to anyone who bought the system pre price drop

Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Metroid Fusion
WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Wario Land 4
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
F-Zero: Maximum Velocity

ok so 1 or 2 of those aren't really my thing, but their are a few genuinely great games there.
