Jim Raynor, although StarCraft II appears to have killed his sense of humor.
I'm glad to have finally found that someone else thinks that its definitely not the same Jim Raynor we know and love from the origonal Starcraft.
He's a brooding, tormented, selfish alcoholic now who, unlike last game, can now be seen in person instead of just as a portrait, but at the same time holds almost no emotional impact. I liked the feeling of the original SC that you see this little guy on a hoverbike or in marine armor, and you basically don't give a crap about him besides he being your most powerful unit, but then you see his face looking at you from under the MENU button and in between messages you get to know him and you're like "Hey, I kinda like this guy". And in the missions themselves, when he'd talk, you got a feeling like you were this powerful being with a contingent of troops under your protection, and when they spoke to you, it brought you down to their level and made you realize that these guys aren't just expendable shock troops, they're real humans who desperately want to survive and are willing to place 100% of their trust in you in order for you to help them stay alive...very few games have that kind of impact on me.
And now, you see him up close in cutscene-quality, almost like meeting face-to-face a good friend you previously only knew via IM, and he turns out to be this emo, one-dimensional mercenary with no hope for anything resembling character development...it's the same kind of feeling Raynor himself must have had seeing Kerrigan infested and realizing that she was still alive, but was now a completely different person from the one he had started to grow attached to; it's almost as bad as if she were dead.
Well, that got a good deal more emotional than I was expecting...on another emotional note, I just noticed that my favorite character from Call of Duty 1, whose death brought me close to tears, appears to have been Ctrl-C,Ctrl-V'd into Call of Duty 4. Sweet! Captain Price is probably my favorite British person of all time, besides Yahtzee.
EDIT: (THERE'S AN EDIT BUTTON?? O_O)
Also, I have a firm belief in Blizzard's complete incapability to fuck
anything up, (besides the storyline of Warcraft, you bastards :|), so I still hold out hope for Jimmy's redemption. It's more than he can say for Kerrigan, anyway.
