So what's you're favourite game universe? The one that just sucks you into the story completely. For me its a tie between Mass Effect and the elder scrolls. Mass effect because it tells this really compelling Sci-fi story that imo is better then star wars. The elder scrolls is kind of the opposite, the main quest lines aren't the thing that sucks me in its the depth of the world and its history, ive spent hours hunting down and reading all of the in game books lolz :D

I love the Fallout universe. I love reading all the back stories and bits and bobs on The Vault Fallout Wiki. [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki]

Mass Effect, the Star Trek of this generation. Which happens to be my favourite non-game universe. At second would be the Elder scrolls universe, I didn't like morrowind, but in Oblivion, I've gone as far as reading about 300 pages about barenziah, whom I did not know about before.

WoW suprisingly enough is a strong contender too, I love the titan lore and the zones containing them, and the lore of the elves. Certified Lore-Whore.

I actually liked morrowind more then oblivion, im fact you actually get to meet barenziah when you travel to mournhold :)

Either Mass Effect, or the Warhammer 40k universe. Space-bourne battle-cathedrals FTW!

I liked the massive amount of dialog, lack of compass, the journal and what not, but I detested the combat.

Personally, I'm really enjoy the campaign my DM has put together for our D&D sessions. He's put a lot of work into creating an interesting universe

What? You never said they had to be video games ;)

Fallout, Mass Effect, and - surprisingly - Halo. If you actually read the back story (terminals, data pads, books, etc.) it's a pretty vast and interesting universe.

Assassin's Creed is interesting is well, although I'm not sure if it that really counts because it is set in actual history. I do enjoy Ubisoft's slant on historical events and the whole Assassins/Templars conflict though, and the books are pretty good.

Half Life, of course, needs an honourable mention...

Fallout universe is my personal favorite. It's pretty interesting and the games make use of the universe and lore pretty well in my opinion. (Well except for 3 for the most part, but it was still a great game)

I do like Mass Effects universe quite a bit as well.

I'd have to say the Halo universe. Say what you like about the seriously shoddy story-telling in Halo 2 and 3, but the actual universe they created is fantastic.

However, the Fallout universe and the Elder Scrolls world give it a serious run for its money. . .in fact, even as I write this i'm undermining my first choice; I could spend days (and have done) reading UESP for all the Elder Scrolls back story.

It would be either mass effect or fallout, other genres dont really expand much on that matter.

I'm pretty fond of the Mass Effect universe, even though it's populated with idiots.

For the best game universe I'd have to go with the Panzer Dragoon series, but then again I'm the fanboy of fanboys over those games.

Mass Effect, Star Trek: TNG (with an exception for Star Trek VI from the original), and Old Republic era Star Wars.

Those are my top and most prominent three, really. Although Assassins Creed is a close contender (more Ezio than Altair, but both are well written enough in my tastes).

Combat never bothered me that much I was mainly a summoned and spell caster lol but man the lack of Compass was so anoying sometimes lol I was doing this mission for the Morag tong that had the most vague directions, took me so long to find the guy I had to kill lol but it was also fantastic because it let you explore so much more then any other game I've played, also I loved the travel system in it, I hate that you can quick travel in skyrim because it kinda ruined oblivion for me.

To me it would be-

Star Wars (KOTOR related, not the film). I love watching those timeline trailers to the Old Republic and I usually try to find out more on the Star Wars wiki.

and

Guild Wars 1 and 2. Yes I'm bias on this on since I a fan on the game. Still I like to read the new recent bio and histories etc on the new races in the upcoming Guild Wars 2 game.

Silent Hill by far!

I love the whole reasoning behind the cult in the town and why the town has different realities and why certain people only exist in certain ones. Deep as.

The Fallout universe.

Such an expansive backstory filled with the faults of mankind and it presents a great setting for the rebuilding of civilisation. The universe is filled with so many great and varied characters that provide backstory and opinions on what's happening in the Fallout world, and there's still so much to explore. The Fallout games (except 3 and BoS) really showed what happens to humanity in the event of a nuclear holocaust with great writing and rich stories filled with grey morality and I love how you can interpret so many things in the games, especially in New Vegas.

Warhammer 40,000.

Get Lord of the Rings, Nazi Germany, the Russian Red Army, the Spanish inquisition and dinosaur bugs, place them all in space, give them power armour and over the top weapons and make them all batshit crazy...the W40K universe.

Also throw in some robotic zombies for good measure.

Pokemon.

No seriously. Pokemon.

Super powered animals with hardly (hardly) any violence besides competitive fighting to which the pokemon agree to do anyway? In around a 20 year future?
Despite Team Rocket etc. running around its pretty fucking awesome.

Has anyone brought up Thief? It's only really weak part was when Eidos tried to dumb it down for consoles with Deadly Shadows. There is a whole community of people who write levels (in the Dark Engine) and fan fictions.

In one of my favorite fan levels, you loose a bunch of your gear when you pack rips while scaling a wall and have to find replacements for much of your stuff and you end up "Blackjacking" guards with an iron skillet.
