The decade? interesting idea hard decision though, let me think I like Zelda & Mario most & my favorite games of each are Twilight Princess & Super Paper Mario respectively, although there's also Super Mario 64 DS was good but..., actually that's irrelevant as Twilight Princess is better then both of them.

I nominate: The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess (The LOZT Princess)

Halo reach.

Its the halo that actually has characters that don't act like robots. And the game actually had some emotions to it.

Arkham Asylum combined stealth and combat VERY well. It'd have my vote.
Either that, or the original Prince of Persia.

METROID PRIME! I'm sorry 'bout the all-caps but it's METROID PRIME...
*Prime fanboy here just FYI*
Either that or Eternal Darkness. If only because they both have Jennifer Hale for voice work (if that's what you could call it in MP)

FEAR.

Yes, a bit of a shock, but it did just about everything right. The combat was phenomenal (required skill, patience and tactics), the game threw psychological terror at you (and made you hate water treatment plants, forever) and had a good story to boot. And the game never cheapened out on you. It didn't put you in a big boss battle against the main baddies. And that gets bonus points in my book.

Truthfully the "game of the decade" discussions I've seen on a lot of sites kind of annoy me. Ironically I've been of the opinion that the industry needs something of an established neutral party like they have "The Academy" for movies, even if it's actual neutrality is debated. I think awards shows like the one on "Spike", and even various magazine lists are too heavily influanced by the industry itself.

A panel of people looking at games objectively would be interesting. See, if I had to pick a "game of the decade" I'd probably say "World Of Warcraft". I have a lot of problems with the game, despite playing it a lot, but I think it was the most influential game of this decade where MMORPGs were coming into their own. It's affected the entire industry and design process in addition to selling well. Even if you hate it, it's one game where the success and influance is pretty much undeniable.

Games like "Half Life 2" might be really good within their respective generes, and have huge followings, but truthfully I don't think they influanced the industry quite as much as WoW did over all.

At any rate, dreams of a seriously objective gaming "academy" for awards and such will probably never transpire any more than a universal games database in which all achievements, trophies, and other accomplishments are stored, even retroactively, and condensed into a universal total. :p

i nominate Batman Arkham Asylum for seamlessly bring together great action, stealth, and cooking mama into a glorious game play turducken. sure as Yahtzee pointed out the box art is stupid, and some of the doors are WAY TOO @#$%ing slow, but it's still a great game. PS: come to think of it, mass effect 2 is probably better but whatever.
