Mass Effect for me without a doubt brilliant story fun game play though this is closely followed by Jak and Daxter which was awesome.
Im assuming you will be getting mass effect 3? :)
Indeed and if there happens to be a collectors edition that costs as much as a car and contains absolutely nothing of any use at all you can bet I will still buy it.
Haha fair enough xD huge fan then :p

Inarguably GTA. No other game series comes close to the cultural depth. I can't think of any other realistic contendor. Shallow kids games (mario, zelda, pokemon) don't count as they are a dime a dozen and not indicative of the quality and production values a videogame can aspire to. Half-life has only had 2 releases and linear fps are not anything special. What other series with as many releases has been as high quality? There's nothing. But you'll all disagree and just list your favourite game series instead.

There's still nothing else out there like the GTA games, other than maybe RDR & LA Noire. All other openworld/city/sandbox games are mindless fun and don't have the attention to detail or depth GTA has. Infamous, prototype, etc. they don't have radio stations, they have hardly any characters, they have simplistic plots and missions and focus more on mindless gameplay. Nothing comes close to GTA in characters, writing or setting. The whole series is a great social commentary relic of american culture in the past 100 years. Different eras and different cities represented in the music, the fashion, the ethnic groups, the cars, architecture, and tone etc. People don't appreciate enough how much more work and detail is put into GTA than any other game series.
Lol when I think of shallow games, GTA is pretty near the top of the list. The selling point of the entire series is the fact that you're given a world in which you can do whatever the fuck you want, and admiring characters and the "social commentary....american culuture" is gonna be near the bottum of most people's list. I played VC, SA, and 4, and thought they were all great, (I thought VC was the best and I didn't really like 4) but I honestly don't think any of them hold up on their story alone, and the gameplay comes down to shooting sequences and driving sequences, both of which are not as deep or fluid as they are in shooting or driving games. The great appeal of the games is the setting and the freedom they provide, not any pretentious sense of symbolism or literary art. Don't try too hard to analyze something for it's deep meaning when it's really just the tale of Scrotie McBoogerBalls. Just remember I Am The Walrus.

Also, dismissing Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon for being "shallow kids games?" Zelda especially is for anybody but kids. Without a guide, the console Zelda games can be gruesomely difficult and discouraging at times. Just because games have color and don't involve killing things every other second, it doesn't mean they're a "kids game." In fact I'd argue the opposite- that a game like GTA would appeal to the insecure child or teenager much more than any of these games, and that Zelda requires much more thought than any GTA. This is all opinion of course.

My big three are Mario, Metroid, and Zelda, and maybe throw in Banjo-Kazooie. There's not much to say for Mario. All his platform outings have been great (even the ugly duckling, Mario Sunshine, is still very enjoyable and unique) and his RPG's and the Paper Mario series especially are superb. Yea, Other M was meh, but Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are both masterpieces and the rest of the series, aside from the DS games, is excellent. Zelda is basically everything I want in a video game. A large, colorful open world, dozens of mechanics which become gradually accessed with progression, using and combining these mechanics in creative ways to solve puzzles....yea there are a lot of them and they all have a similar concept, but each one has a unique atmosphere and a different set of tools. In this way, Banjo-Kazooie is very similar, except with a bigger emphasis on platforming. I think that Tooie is superior to the original, and I also think that it's one of, if not the best game that's playable on 360.

Actually, check a bit upwards and you can see I've already contributed to this thread in the fashion that would be required.
Nice try.
Your response to mine contained nothing of value or relevance to the discussion; irregardless of your previous contributions. Your prior response was not related to the one you made to me, so it isn't relevant.

Antagonizing people...um...weren't you the one who just dropped by to remark that the point of the thread is basically trollish, without even apparently fully comprehending the OP?
I provided the most truthful response I could. "Best Threads" are trollish by their nature.
They're essentially "Vs" threads, despite the pleas of the OP to keep it civil.
Further, I did not want to pick any one series, because it ignores the merits I see in other series I really like. Conflict arises as a result of this innate trolling.

I need not point any further than the GTA discussion as proof of this in action.

And I don't intend to take it anywhere to a moral level, or higher etical standards, or whatever. I merely wished to note that saying basically something that can easily be qualified as not sensible, but just trollish, then turning around and claim others might be trollish is a bit of a strange practice.
Yes, you imply hypocrisy that isn't there with a fallacy. Then you play the "moral highground" card, and now you slap it away.
*shrugs*
I'm done trying to reason with you.
Baroo?

Legacy of Kain series. The games themselves aren't the best in the universe, I'll freely admit to that, but the voice acting, dialogue are beyond perfect and a lot of other series just WISH they had such a complex storyline.
Agreed (except the last statement, which was a tad arrogant). LoK series is fantastic, fun, and very easy to get yourself lost in. I love it
I'm also a big fan of Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Mass Effect and Metal Gear Solid series'
I don't think I could choose a favourite. I also love Zelda and Final Fantasy but don't really count them as series', technically, because they don't all follow on from one another

Its like an RPG played like Mass Effect with the spinny wheel that stops everything but feels like a third person action. Also the story is solid and the characters and are interesting and it made me care about star wars once again. Both KOTor and KOTor 2

So many choices. Instantly I'm tempted to go with Ratchet and Clank as it got me into gaming. Unfortunately they haven't been as good since the third one, probably because it was so phenomenal. I'll also throw the Prince of Persia series in there as well.

Ultima.

Probably the most revolutionary CRPG series in history. Years ahead of its time. Was doing stuff in the late 80's and early 90's that we didn't see again until Oblivion. Mature, sophisticated themes and stories at a time when its competitors were almost all monster mashes. Not to mention spinoffs like Ultima Underworld, which is where Looking Glass Studios got their start (later to bring us System Shock and Thief), and the outstanding "Worlds of Ultima" games which in tone and setting were some of the most original CRPGs of all time. And then Ultima Online, the progenitor of the modern MMO era (although it was Everquest that would come to be the most imitated).

HM to Fallout.

I would have to go with GTA.
No matter how much people complain about the new installments being gritty brown, that is what the game is aiming for and is exceptionally great at it. The guys at rockstar have all my money.

Either Legend of Zelda or the Total War series. I have 4 of each and they each rank at the top of my list for their platform. Total War offers massive, epic battles and with each game, the graphics improve to the point where the current game, Shogun II, looks beautiful on ultra settings. Zelda because no other console game has the replay value to me. It has boss fights that can be difficult, rather challenging puzzles, and each game improves upon the last. I really like how Twilight Princess added the ability to perform various special attacks, Wind Waker added in better puzzles and technically started the "special move" category, Majoras Mask had the mask system which can be incredibly entertaining, like the one you use to dance, and Ocarina of Time was my introduction to the series and was just all around enjoyable.

If I had to pick one.... it would be Battlefield, though.... starting in a few months it might very well be Duke Nukem. Then again in November Battlefield will probably win me back over.

Every series that comes to mind has it's bad parts:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
Tony Hawk games not made by Neversoft
F.E.A.R. 2

I'd probably say Final Fantasy though, for the same reason I recently said in another thread: they actually change up every game instead of rehashing the same shit over and over again. Sure there were some bad games, but it is the only series I've seen that actually made pretty significant changes between the games.

On pure longevity, and despite increasing negativity towards it, I still have to go with Final Fantasy. It's lost a bit of the lustre with the evolution of its various systems, but I still buy the games as there's always a bit of a nostalgia kick that gets put into every one.

A close second is God of War, which I think is a great action-y way to look at ancient mythology stories whose texts are typically drier than a piece of burnt toast.
