Inarguably GTA. No other game series comes close to the cultural depth. I can't think of any other realistic contendor. Shallow kids games (mario, zelda, pokemon) don't count as they are a dime a dozen and not indicative of the quality and production values a videogame can aspire to. Half-life has only had 2 releases and linear fps are not anything special. What other series with as many releases has been as high quality? There's nothing. But you'll all disagree and just list your favourite game series instead.

There's still nothing else out there like the GTA games, other than maybe RDR & LA Noire. All other openworld/city/sandbox games are mindless fun and don't have the attention to detail or depth GTA has. Infamous, prototype, etc. they don't have radio stations, they have hardly any characters, they have simplistic plots and missions and focus more on mindless gameplay. Nothing comes close to GTA in characters, writing or setting. The whole series is a great social commentary relic of american culture in the past 100 years. Different eras and different cities represented in the music, the fashion, the ethnic groups, the cars, architecture, and tone etc. People don't appreciate enough how much more work and detail is put into GTA than any other game series.

Considering OP said what is the best game series TO YOU, your argument becomes quite invalid.GTA is a great series and I loved every game even I and II but for me it is hardly the best series out there. Come to think of it, I don't have a favorite game series but I'm unnaturally attracted to all Forgotten Realms games

Depending on how we can qualify series. Alot of the old PS2 era games by NIS were all in the same setting and eventually fed into the Disgaea mythos. Personally I would count them all as Disgaea games. If I'm allowed the Disgaea is my favourite and best games series, They have a rich and developed world and although you only experience the games through a semi-linear story each game draws on different elements and expands the world. The amount of setting has been enough that we run our weekly pen and paper settings in the Disgaea universe without any need to create additional contents. The gameplay has been roughly the same throughout but each game changes things up with new mechanics and systems that each one feels that you have to learn it all again, whilst being oddly similair. Forays into different game types (Z.H.P for a rougelike, Prinny games for platformers and even Disgaea Infinite for a time travelling detective mystery) they've shown that you can be loyal to a setting and themes without having to make the same game repeatedly (i.e Pokemon...)

If I can't classify them all as one series, I'll agree with Valleyshrew

The GTA games have been stellar for all the reasons above.

Just in case people get upset about pokemon remarks. I'm a huge fan of the series, am playing through White as we speak. Each game is good, but taken as a whole they haven't bought anything outstanding to the table for a long while.

Legacy of Kain series. The games themselves aren't the best in the universe, I'll freely admit to that, but the voice acting, dialogue are beyond perfect and a lot of other series just WISH they had such a complex storyline.

I'm quite partial to the Shin Megami Tensei series. I obviously haven't played the 30+ games and spin-off, but I liked those I could find. They're all jrpg, but some are tactical, some have turn-based combat, other real-time, a little bit for everyone.

Just because in Zelda your not killing things every five minutes, doesn't make it a kid....No... Must...resist...flaming.

Your entitled to you own opinion, but i think it's a incredibly shallow opinion to have, and that's all i'm going to say.

OT: Metal gear solid, or the Fallout series, Mainly because they are so fleshed out, especially when compared to other videogame franchises.

Depends on how you look at it.

If you go for fun value alone I have to say Halo. Played Halo 1 and 2 when I was about ten, and the whole reason I bought a 360 was to play Halo 3. Must have over 250 hours played with friends on custom maps and matchmaking. Currently in love with Halo: Reach too - the only game I didn't enjoy from the go was ODST, which I need to go back to.

If you go for value of entertainment, Mass Effect. No game made me feel so attatched to the universe as those games.

There is no singular best game series.
To claim there is would be narrow-minded and trollish.

Yeah, saying a gaming company is raping your childhood is at least classy!

Ratchet & Clank.

7 console games in, if you count Quest for Booty, and the series is still going strong, and still pushing out incredibly original and fun weapons.

I'm quite fond of the Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona specifically.

I've never really run across another series that made me care so much about side characters in every single game I've played. The combat is wonderfully deep and difficult. Plus, the series is steeped in mythology from around the world and that keeps it interesting to me. There have been times where I just find myself looking up every single Persona or demon I have trying to understand their backstory.

Did you have a point to make with that flame-bait?

Suikoden 1,2, and 3! JRPG at its finest!

Yep that's it, no more games after 3!
5 was pretty decent, albeit, too late to salvage the series.
Then Tierkreis came in and put the final nail in the coffin with that...squeaky...voiced...thing.

Did you have a point to make with your own flame bait? Everyone's merrily discussing stuff, only for you to stride in on a dark horse and growl.

Fortunately the OP asks quite clearly for peoples preference not an emphatic truth.

OT: My favourite game series is GTA. Since I got the platinum edition of GTA for the PS1 I have been hooked, a hugely dense intertextual, biting and funny game series. I have never been so impressed by the writing in a game or so immersed.

GTA4 for me is the highlight of the series, the hours I have wasted just driving baout immersed in a fictional semi existential relentless journey around New York just wathcing life carry on around me. No other game has given me that experience.

Copying my reply and posting a non-response isn't answering my question.
Either stick to the topic at hand, or don't post. It's that simple.

Dawn of War or Mass Effect; I know the latter has been only two games, but it has been really good so far; I like the story, the system is pretty fluid and the universe feels pretty fresh.
DoW has always been fun and the games came with a good number of skirmish maps, so it gets one of my votes. Would have to say in the end I prefer Mass Effect.
