man what a difficult question!
ugh well for early childhood sakes(i'm only 18 but meh) pokemon and zelda totally got me into gaming.
for overall, the final fantasy series has always been huge to me. i loved them all, except 9(and i will never understand why i disliked that one, maybe it was i just despised the art style).

Metal Gear Solid

The characters are better realised than most TV series
the gameplay doesn't get old and feels very unique
so many interesting conflicts of Science vs Supernatural, Terrorism where you can fight for what you believe in vs a soldier who only obeys orders
the character's philosophies
hundreds of unique codec conversations
the ability to break the fourth wall and re-immerse you in 2 minutes
technical innovations like Octocamo
conspiracies
cultural references
The ability to go through a game without killing anyone and being rewarded for it
The End boss fight, the most brilliantly realised sniper duel in a game as well as featuring unorthodox tactics (killing him via old age, capturing his parrot then releasing it to see where it flies)

Just so much greatness in those games

Personal favorites: Banjo & Kazooie, Doom, Half Life, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat (only 2d section minus 9 since its not out yet.)

Banjo & Kazooie would probably be my favorite because I grew up with it, and still love the feeling of the game to this day

I'm going to go with elder scrolls despite not having played daggerfall or arena. Morrowind is just so damn good and oblivion was a worthy successor.

Legend of Zelda, consistently good, a strange mixture of the familiar and unique in each game.

The Elder Scrolls. I could play Morrowind and Oblivion again and again. They're great for roleplaying (somehow), incredibly fun and have modding on top of all that. The first ones were (perhaps arguably, I'm not really sure) not quite the same.

If I'd played Portal it would probably be a contest but as I haven't, (though it has been moved from my to do list to my WHY HAVEN'T I FUCKING DONE THIS YET THE SEQUEL'S COMING OUT list) I can't really judge.

Having played em as a kid, I quite partial to choose a fun series... Well, for sometime... Both the Crash Bandicoot series and Spyro the Dragon were good... Well, for like the first 3 games... But for modern games? Hell, I Rock Band now and then since I can easily choose from my wide selection of songs and I'm obsessed with music...

Quit being a douche all the OP asked for was an opinion not an insult.

If you're going to call people names, at least be creative about it.
... So, you're insulting him because his insults weren't good enough? Tell me this is sarcasm.

Pokemon because I love how strategic it can become. Oh my, yes. So much work you can put into developing the custom team, a team perfectly crafted for taking out Pokemon who should normally defeat them with ease. The joy of knowing you left your opponent in shock at how well your team is structured and how fluidly it moves.

Or, Assassin's Creed. I love history, and I absolutely love the concept of reliving the life of someone in historical time periods that aren't often visited by games, movies and even books as often as I'd like.

I'd say my favorite series is Ratchet & Clank.
Sure Deadlocked wasn't as good as the games before it, but it was still fun.
And sure, I would be happier if I could just pretend that crappy PSP game had never been made.

But it's still the only series that is making me consider buying a PS3.

I'm late to this party, so sorry if someone already said this, but:

Metroid

The first one was a huge turning point for videogames: The first game (in North America) to have a password system, one of the first 2D side-scrollers to... scroll? in both directions. Multiple endings depending on how well you did and the (then) huge surprise that Samus was a girl. Pretty sure that makes her the first badass chick protagonist in gaming.

Super Metroid is considered one of the greatest games ever made, containing a great blend of intense boss battles, tough gameplay in general (I HATE water...) and a great atmosphere created solely through 16-bit sound and not a second of dialogue.

Metroid Prime brought it to 3D, and even though most Metroid fans were worried how it would work out, it was amazing. When it was released, the graphics blew me away. I had to double check to make sure it was actually my Gamecube and not my Xbox that was running this game. The atmosphere in that game was up to Super Metroid standards, still without using dialogue.

Long story short, the first games created huge changes in video games as a whole. The later games built upon that legacy and while they didn't revolutionize games, they were still high quality games (not including Other M. That was just...ugh)
