I thought that was Dead or Alive (hence the pun that the company would be either dead or alive if the game did well or failed)

Actually, both of them have the same story in terms of names. Although Final Fantasy isn't always attributed to it. It was also going to be the game director's final game before retiring, but it bolstered sales and helped make some nice revenue for the company.
