Best Game You Gave a Second Chance

The game that made the worst first impression with me whose effect was reversed after giving the game another chance is Morrowind. Between having to grow accustomed to a slow paced/self paced open-world lore heavy RPG after having only played either JRPGs or Knights of the Old Republic and learning how to pick the right started traits and stats for my custom class character (Man Eater. I had no interest in using Predator since it brings to mind dreadlocked aliens when constantly capitalized),the learning curve was pretty steep plus the visuals were slightly off-putting (coming off of late 1990s-early 2000s PC games such as Nocturne as I did).

This seems to be a recurring entry in this thread. Morrowind is probably the best example of this phenomenon and why Bethesda Softworks tries so hard to make the series more accessible from the get-go these days.

battlefield games. I sucked at them, but I was 13 when I first played, and never touched the series since then. Now I love them to death, level 33 on BF3 and support class is my favorite, C-4.... and on rush? nothing better.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Although I guess a seventh or eighth chance would be more like it :p

I couldn't get into it when it first came out, I hated the blend of first person and third person and I was annoyed by the fact takedowns used batteries. The game didn't really suck me in back then despite trying it out several times and the fact I had some technical issues with it didn't help either.

My brother kept insisting I try the game again though and give it a real chance this time so I went and played through it a few weeks back. Loved it once I got used to the controls a bit and unlocked some battery recharge augments (I cbb eating candy and I liked going through the game using non-violent takedowns 99% of the time).

Knights of the Old Republic 2 would be that game. i fell in love with the first one but, the sequels starting planet (the mining facility) felt like it was dragging on too long with needless BS. later on after i beat KotOR one two more times i gave number two a second shot and loved it more than the first one.

Morrowind. Hated it the first time I played it, picked it up a week later and loved it.

Just curious, when's the best time to take out a life insurance policy on Aerith?
do you mean when to expect that something bad might happen to her?... City of the Ancients is a little bit dangerous, other than that Aeris will be fine.... :)
That's... actually not what I was asking. I was making a joke. Humor. Apparently FAILED humor on my part. Probably should have followed it with a :).
Oh, I'm so sorry! I hope I didn't spoil anything.

After loving UT99, I gave the demo of UT2003 a whirl and absolutely hated what they had done with the Unreal Tournament franchise. Then I tried it again a few months later and loved it. Picked up the game and had my first online multiplayer experiences ever with that game.

The same thing happened with UT2004.

InFamous 2 (oh what a surprise, Sexy Devil is fanboying all over a Sony game at the first chance he gets). First time I played it I couldn't get over what a douche Cole was and how predictable the plot was. Second time I no longer cared about that and was surprised by how much depth every other character had and how good the actual writing was. I was just too focused on hating Cole to notice.

Though the gameplay was always awesome.

Shadow of the Colossus for me. I remember when I was younger I couldn't get over the control scheme and I didn't have the patience for the game, and eventually put it down after around an hour in. I decided to play it again recently after setting up my Ps2 and, oh my, it's a stunning game. I honestly can't believe I've left this game virtually unplayed for six years.

I gave up on Crysis 2.

Picked it up later, played all the way through, and it's probably one of my favorite FPS's of all time.

Baldur's Gate. I was quite young when I played it, and my normal strategy when playing these types of games was to run at any enemy and start swinging my sword. Inevitably I died very quickly using this tactic.

I came back to it a couple of months later using a new and more patient strategy and fun ensued.

Fallout. I got it for my birthday when I was younger. When I got to the abandoned vault, I thought it was boring - because I didn't know how to play it, and I thought the combat was annoying and you simply don't get enough action points if you don't sink atleast 2 poitns into Agility.

Then, I was convinced to play it again. I had looked at the manual and the F1 guide, and then started to get hang of it. At the time, I didn't know it was about to become one of my favourite RPGs. I finished it twice, as a intelligent, agile male, and secondly as a physically oriented female. It's somewhat suprising, having to play those two completely different gameplay styles, and the fact that alot of missions are played differently. Persaude the guy to not blow up the orphanage, or stab him in the face with a kitchen knife (though I usually took the second option anyway).

TF2, I bought it right after release for the 360 & couldn't get into it.Then the great xbox live holiday outage of 07 happened & it was the only game I could manage to play online without major lag. It's one of my favorite games now, of course I've moved on to pc, but I never would have played it if xbox live hadn't been messed up for those couple of weeks.

Fallout 3. When I first completed Vault 101 and then arrived at Megaton, I said to myself:

"Wait a minute. This sucks. Fuck this game."

I started the game again a few days ago and said to myself:

"Wait a minute. This game is awesome!"

KOTOR 2's first level is awful . Absolutely terrible. After that, though, it's utterly amazing (Well, to me anyway...)
Jedi outcast as well. For the first 4 levels or so, you get no force or lightsaber powers, and it sucks balls. after that though, it's amazing.

TF2. Really, really didn't like it at first. Now it's my favourite game :D

The Binding of Isaac, I can't even be sure how it happened. I didn't hate it at first but was uninterested, but somehow I gave the demo another try and then bought the full version soon after.

I'm mixed on the rest of the game (it's still fun albeit unfinished) but I agree entirely that the first levels are awful (and too long).

I think Final Fantasy X would be mine. I've had a PS2 a couple of times before but my current one is the one I've had the longest that works and is mine and, mine alone so I actually get to play games on it whenever I want.

Anyway, first time I played Final Fantasy X it didn't really engage me and, I didn't like the voice acting. The unskippable cut-scenes were annoying too. A few years later and, experience with Final Fantasy XIII made me look on X far more kindly and, eventually beat it. I didn't get anybodies final weapon but I beat Ultima and, Omega Weapons so there's that.

I guess Okami may count.
You see I bought a few Wii games and I played them in order not all of them at once. I had a quick go at Okami but it didn't leave much of an impression other than it look pretty. I end up playing something else instead and months later I got back into it and end up loving it.
