Watchmen, without doubt.
I haven't read many graphic novels or comics yet, but The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum are two brilliant Batman comics.

Let me put it this way- I do NOT read graphic novels. I do not enjoy them. I find some minor entertainment at certain parts, but that's rare. And today, I just finished reading Watchmen in preperation for the movie (my friends all said "read it first") and I LOVED it. The ending wasn't what I had hoped for, but it was still amazing. So if you haven't read it, I definitely suggest it.

... I guess another exception might be Dr. McNinja. Does that count? =P

The Walking Dead. A black and white comic about a zombie apocalypse. It focuses on the interpersonal relationships between the survivors. Amazing story is only surpassed by George Romero's The Living Dead Series. (Most likely because The Walking Dead was inspired by Romero's work, but still.) Be warned though that it is not a "happy" comic book. Like Watchmen, it is a drama. Very enjoyable.

I'm going to say Top 10, but that's more of a personal favorite than a universally alcoladed work.

Top 10 is also written by Alan Moore and deals with a Super Hero Police Force in a city populated entirely by Super Heroes. It's a LOT more fun than Watchmen and deals with a lot of the same themes. I highly reccomend it.

Y: The Last Man by Brian K Vaughn- Brilliant
Wanted by Mark Miller - no relation to the piece of shit movie of the same name.
Sandman by Neil Gaiman - Incredible
Preacher by Garth Ennis - Amazing, if you don't mind all the religious stuff.

300 was a pretty lame GN, and anyhting by Alan Moore is already too praised to worth a mention as most people have read it anyways. The Dark Knight Returns was fine story, but the art was so shit I can't recommend it to anyone.

JSA: The Liberty Files,

An interesting little self contained graphic novel that examines three heroes as if they were World War 2 Secret Agents working with the army. It follows "The Unholy Three" a team made up of The Bat (Batman), The Clock (Hour Man) and The Owl (Dr. Midnite) as they hunt Jack the Grin (The Joker) in Casablanca in an attempt to thwart a Nazi Super Weapon. It's exceedinly awesome.

Batman: Year One,

Frank Millar writes, but does not draw, this intense and realistic retelling of both Batman and Lt. Gordon's first year in Gotham. Less dark and gritty than DKR with a much more likeable and interesting version of the Batman character as the star. We also get to see a lot of the surprisingly badass Lt. Gordon as he deals with the corruption in the Gotham Police Department.

Batman: Hush Volumes 1 and 2

Jim Lee's awesome artwork does justice to a brilliant story by Jeph Loeb, Hero's fame, it's the first time since "Batman: Knightfall" has Batman been truly challenged. It's everything a Batman tale should be...Dark, thrilling and intelligent. Also by Loeb and definitely worth a read are Batman: Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory.

Going slightly off topic, next time you get a some chicken stuck in your teeth look in the mirror as you try to suck it out ( helps if you add a blank stare to that too )...why?...because you will discover the secret to Heath Legder's Joker :p

*licks lips together like there's a piece of chicken stuck* "Why..so...SEEERIOUS?" :D

I read manga instead. Try JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Battle Angel Alita, Cromartie High School and Hunter X Hunter.

Better than 100% of all graphic novels I've ever read, and I've read stuff like Maus and Frank Miller.

If you MUST have graphic novels, the really old Spider-Man and Nova comics are good. Hilarious and dated, but good.

*looks kinda sheepishly guilty* actually I already decided to "retrieve" said oscar. figured he wouldn't miss it. Besides I can know justify buying a trophy cabinet.
