Truth be told, she is the only one that hasn't been exploited by a game designer.
You mean the Samus Aran who could play through her entire first game in a swimsuit if you completed it fast enough?

Anyway, Cate Archer is better than all of them.
Sorry, it appears my suggestion was not quite thought-through. To my credit, however, heroines will always be exploited in this industry. I'm not saying it is right; I am just saying it is.

Definetely April Ryan, Zoe, Jade, and Heather. Faith is a *****, but the game is not bad itself.

Alyx Vance from the Half-life series for sure, followed by Princess Farah from Princess of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Not bad choices at all, werent it for the fact that they arent leading characters.
Indeed they aren't leading characters, but they are both some of the most realized characters I've ever seen in a video-game. I can't really think of any leading female characters who are close to that good.

Also, I agree. Faith it a total *****.

Oh wow, only one vote for Cate Archer? Come on, she had by far the best fashion sense of any one of these leading ladies. Unfortunately, that was about the only thing she had going for her.

Also, Zoe and April were awesome and I am still waiting for a resolution to that story - Dreamfall: the Longest Journey almost brought me to tears at the end. Faith was interesting but not very well fleshed out. Jade was interesting but I unfortunately never finished Beyond Good and Evil. I played both female Revans and Shepherds and they were good, if a little cardboardish.

What I think you have to realize is that all protagonists in games are limited in terms of personality and that there are just as few male characters that are fully explored character wise. I'm still hoping for a female protagonist in a GTA game though, that would turn the series on its head and give it a fresh kick.

Cate Archer! We have all forgotten her! Not one mention of her in this thread.
Grandiose supreme, Miss Archer is. A superb personality indeed.
You have shamed us all, sir, and our unkind memories.

GLaDOS.
They really need to meet each other.
If they do the world would end. Rule under Skynet or the hordes of Mister Smith would be preferable.
Unless of course we at least do get "cake" sometime in the new GLoDAN regime.

How is it that this character was never mentioned? you have full control over her, she's not just a sex object, and she has real motivations and reasons for her actions.

a woman playing myst. that makes your character female! haHA!

If you are thinking of naming GTA as the answer, we mean the heroine with and "E" at the end. The best double X chromosome protagonist of a game. Not a side kick, not an intermittent companion, but the main lady of the story.

Who is, according to you, one of the best leading female characters that has ever appeared in a video game? And what do you think makes a heroine memorable?

Two of my favourites: Zoey Castillo, from The Longest Journey: Dreamfall.
Intelligent, resourceful and absolutely humane. And April Ryan, from both of the Longest Journey games, the original and the sequel.

Your turn now...
i'm sure it will get done to death, but Jade in Beyond Good and Evil.
I've always been quite partial to Jill Valentine, though apart from Nemesis, I think the games with her in it have been rubbish.

hmm... Im sorry, i just gotta say if you think the X-Blades heroine is the best game heroine... watch the X-Blades Unskippable... many lulz shall follow.

Okay, I think without a doubt, Samus owns this thread. Nuff said.

next, i gotta say something about female Shepherd, She really did seem to be more of a tack on than anything else... really, her only love interest besides the Androgesbialien(A new word has been born) was Kaiden Alenko... eww... He thought he was carth onassi and was less interresting than the freaking elevator rides. Really, I think that without female shepherd, he would have just died without even the choice to save him.

er... I think you can glean from my response, that he was the one who ran the suicidal "Human Shield" opperation...

Okay, just my mention for a good heroine in a game... Chris Lightfellow, The Bearer of the True Water Rune(true fire rune if she remains the main character) of Suikoden III.

She was the Leader of her kingdom's Knights and had a storyline that was just as good as Geddoe's before the three merge (sorry, Hugo, you got pretty gipped)

xD Suikoden III might be too obscure a game for most, however.

I liked the females in FF10, also Alyxx Vance and April Ryan. I don't count female Shepard because it's the player who controls her, so of course you're going to like her.

I'm surprised nobody has said Lara Croft yet. I watched a video of the Red Faction: Guerrilla pack, and Samanya seems to be a good character.
Lara Croft here for me.

..Well, at least she's SMART. :p She's not a bad role model, either, apart from the whole killing wildlife thing... PETA must hate her...

Jade, Beyond Good & Evil... Anybody? Anybody at all? *sits in his corner*
I'm surprised more people haven't listed Jade. She's the first that comes to mind for me.
Then again, I haven't met too many people that have played Beyond Good and Evil.

Jade.

Yeah!

Though I question the green lipstick. I mean..."the hell?!?" It's GREEN, woman! It's ODD!

I was actually upset when "a certain character" "died"

Haven't played one with a female protagonist. Does that make me sexist?
No, it isn't your fault, their arnt many games with female protagonists in comparison to Male protagonists.

some games you could try are Final Fantasy X, Wild Arms 3, Mirrors Edge, Metroid and Beyond Good And Evil.

WET's Rubi Malone. Mainly because she isn't a sex object and she kicks serious arse. I mean, she's sexy, but not two-melons-glued-to-a-pole sexy.
