First post here! I'd say metal, nothing quite like it for smashing up hoards of enemies.. I think this song would be great for an epic battle

Both work great. Mostly depending on the game.
This.
It depends on how it's implemented and what type of game, though I tend to lean more towards Classical or symphonic (think LOTR battles, they trump any sort of battle in terms of epic-ness)

That being said, I can't fathom anything but metal playing during fights in games like Painkiller//Quake.

Well it really depends on the game, and the place where you are in the game, Classical can do wonders for a D-Day landing, but if you are fighting in some WW2 Insane asylum the make some black metal. As previously stated, it depends on the game.

So fuckin wierd, as soon as I saw your post I thought 'I bet it's Korpiklaani'.

I was expecting Hunting Song though!
Well, i just took a random Klaani song, could aswell have been hunting song.

And it seems like im starting to get predictable!
Nah, it's not that you'repredictable it's just that Korpiklaani rocks an that was the first band that came to my head!

This thread is an excellent place for me to rant about the horrid music from World at War. Double bassdrums and dropped D guitar works with games like Gears of War and when you play World at War in multiplayer but by God it was excrusiating to listen Treyarch's amateuristic attempt at music making. Games like Company of Heroes and pictures like Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan managed to bring tension with only classical instruments.

Though the score in CoD 4 had electric guitars I would probably praised WaW if the music was at least slightly like CoD 4.
I really enjoyed the music in WAW, especially the russian sections. Got my blood pumping storming the Reichstag!

Here's a piece that inspired many metal songs, any metal fans should listen to this masterpiece:

The crescendo at 5.40 blows my mind. It's METAL. Also notice that the riff is 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'

Yeah, there's real aggression and power in that section. And not a guitar in sight.

If you want a great natural high, blast that piece in your living room at full volume... it makes me glad to be alive!

What ever fits.

MadWorld had hip hop all throughout the game. It fit perfectly and the boss fights were exciting.

Pokemon Red/Blue had a Gym Boss theme that cannot be assigned to one specific genre.

Baten Kaitos Origins had two variations on boss battle music and slight variations on the enemy encounter battles.

Metroid has a triumphant horn section for Brinstar, but for Ridley, his section had a dark techno vibe.

Castlevaina: Dawn of Sorrow featured a classical theme for most areas, occasionally featuring a theme start from a old fantasy movie.

Tetris features Russian folk music.

My answer: Whatever fits. As long as the music and gameplay reach syncronicity, it's fine by me.

On a lighter and a bit embarrassed note. I've only played through WaW one time because of the black screen bug and that was way back in November. Proves that you find a lot of things to get annoyed at when things doesn't work.
