I think it depends on the battle.
Pretty much this. I wouldn't want pulse pounding metal during my fight with The Boss at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. It just wouldn't fit. Conversely, said metal would work very well for other final bosses like...Mundus in DMC1.

Both have their place, as do other varieties of music like the aforementioned Trance/Funk/Electric from Final Fantasy 8.

I don't expect hardcore metal when I play Eternal Sonata, nor do I expect classical music when I'm driving my two swords into the face of a minotaur as Kratos.
I suppose by "Classical" he meant classical arrangements with orchestral instruments, which is what God of War did.
I haven't actually played a God of War game in at least a year and a half. I was mostly guessing it had metal because it was an action hack 'n' slash game. Feel free to replace Kratos with a proper game with metal in it, I just didn't really want to re-use Devil May Cry.

Whatever fits the setting perfectly. In otherwords, if I play a game about a Persian prince kicking ass, I want some fucking persian music. Not some fucking Godsmack or whatever.

Ah, I see. Let's see, what other game used metal for battles? Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, but the metal didn't work as well as the upbeat arabian tunes with their rolling drums of the other games.

Here's what God of War went with, and it was good:

So fuckin wierd, as soon as I saw your post I thought 'I bet it's Korpiklaani'.

I was expecting Hunting Song though!
Well, i just took a random Klaani song, could aswell have been hunting song.

And it seems like im starting to get predictable!
If you're going with Korpiklaani, I'd much rather fight with Wooden Pints or Crows Bring The Spring playing in the background.

Metal or my favorite electro/techno. Classical music is too "not so heavy" for combats.

Actually, this.

Simply because I regret the last time I left my iPod on shuffle while playing CoD4.

I like classical metal. You know, ACDC's 6th symphony in E minor was easily the best rockin'-opera I ever saw...

Classical, but choosing the right piece is important. The Blue Danube by Strauss or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart aren't exactly "KILL KILL KILL" choices. But modern orchestral (like, say, Jeremy Soule's body of work) is excellent.

eh...I prefer...classical.
But I do suppose it would depend on the battle at hand. It all depends on the atmosphere and the setting.

Hip Hop.

Failing that, classic if you've got a gun to my head. You can't tell me you wouldn't be spurned on to kill thousands to themes like this

in my opinion the music makes the game but which music is better for going into combat metal or classical?
Orchestral. Classical uses the same instruments, true, but the sound is very different.

Here's some orchestral music:

It's not classical. It uses the same instruments, it's played by an orchestra, same as classical, but the music itself is definitely not classical - it's something far better.

Explain to me how hip hop fits any kind of battle? A boss fight with hip hop playing in the background would be a musical train wreck.

Because there is more to hip hop than what you hear on radio, I've heard enough instrumentals and tracks that are varied and high energy enough to get me pumped up for any kind of fight. At least, more-so than some of the distorted metal tracks that I have heard on video games anyway that I am personally not a fan of. Remixes work well too.
