Jazz.
Definately jazz.
Especially Frank Sinatra.
Something about him makes me want to go slaughter stuff.

For me it has to either be slightly funny (Butcher Pete thirded) fast or epic, almost all of the time it's metal for me.

It's in Saint's Row 2.

And yes, it doesn't exactly inspire me to violence.

It depends on the game, as long as it has no lyrics. Some good examples are:
Metal (sort of)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuDb7xU7sMw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xeu-zpcwdaM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUZPaC2CEsQ&feature=related (Without the vocals)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2Rnguxying (This would be good on mortal kombat or something)
Classical (also sort of)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2cFEHM9yMw (This would suit a Silent hill boss fight)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AutdEDoi3s (Scary as fuck, but would be blasphemy to use it on anything besides what was intended)

I like both in combat but I think it would more or less depend on the game. Like one that is trying to bring out more emotion I think should be classical, and one that is all about violence without any care for characters or emotion should probably be metal. My personal favorite though is classical.

It completely depends on the game. Your faster action games work well with a rock soundtrack, but even that isn't absolute.

I like 40's period music that is a stark contrast to the gratuitous violence that is happening. I.E. Murdering a guy with a shotgun in Fallout while The Ink Spots are playing. Or Burning a man alive in Bioshock while light jazz plays in the background.

Although going on a killingspree while DevilDriver or Chimera play would be cool too...

I like to play TF2 sometimes with Baroque and Classical in the background. Adds an air of importance to everything.

Also, I once played that "Art of War" TF2 theme over a TF2 game. You know the drum-only one, right? You know that epic pause in the middle? Everytime that happened in-game, something epic would happen whilst everything else froze to a halt (cinema style), then the drums would burst back in and everything would carry on.

Whether this happenes by coincidence and I just notice it due to epicness, or it's a conspiracy, who knows!?

Metal when it comes to games like Devil May Cry or orchestral in games like God of War etc.
But I would rather prefer there to be metal action packed music in all games.

I think it depends on the battle. If you're fighting something huge [cough]SoTC[/cough] then I'd definitely say classical. For something more fast paced or just a traditional battle I might prefer metal, but I think classical is better altogether for battles.

The delight, is that compositionally, tech/death/classal/ambient/doom and symphonic metals are almost identical to neocontemporary/baroque classical music. Even in some cases as far as grand symphony music.
They obviously aren't performed the same way, but in writing it is very similar.
or to go further still

But on the OT: Imagine a huge war scene in a video game to this right here ...

Pretty much this. I wouldn't want pulse pounding metal during my fight with The Boss at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. It just wouldn't fit. Conversely, said metal would work very well for other final bosses like...Mundus in DMC1.

Both have their place, as do other varieties of music like the aforementioned Trance/Funk/Electric from Final Fantasy 8.

I don't expect hardcore metal when I play Eternal Sonata, nor do I expect classical music when I'm driving my two swords into the face of a minotaur as Kratos.

I would prefer metal for an FPS or RPG, some kind of game where I controlled only myself or maybe a squad. In an RTS, such as Rome: Total War, I thoroughly enjoyed the classical they had in there.

Either can be used really well, metal is better for the hardcore explody scenes, but there's a particular moment in bioshock that I hold dear, where you fend off splicers while the Nutcracker plays in the background. I felt part of a very elaborate, violent ballet.

Hey, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCTH4hSBOQI describes it pretty well.

Why separate the two when you can mix them? I love symphonic metal...
This. So very very VERY this.

Plus cheesy power metal about slaying your enemies [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UonQn2X3d5g] and wielding magic [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgUhtFxeFBM] swords [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye6YHQ8AZzU] can be hilariously fitting at times.

There's even songs to create a warlike feel [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VXIqApNvr0]

The No More Heroes Main Theme being played in the background as i slit the balls off of all the assholes i go through till i reach one of the ten main bosses.
