Trance can really influence the atmosphere, same with classical when it's good but trance also suits combat so I really think trance is best (I despise metal so thats a definite no)

Pretty much this. I wouldn't want pulse pounding metal during my fight with The Boss at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. It just wouldn't fit. Conversely, said metal would work very well for other final bosses like...Mundus in DMC1.

Both have their place, as do other varieties of music like the aforementioned Trance/Funk/Electric from Final Fantasy 8.

I don't expect hardcore metal when I play Eternal Sonata, nor do I expect classical music when I'm driving my two swords into the face of a minotaur as Kratos.
Agreed 100%

If by classical you just mean orchestrated: definitely. Particularly in boss battles, an epic score fits so much better than some guy yelling his head off.

Hell yeah.

I have found the Battlestar Galactica drum music to be awesome for fast paced games, and the more classical stuff to be great for slower ones, and just listening to.

Classical can be excellent if correctly implemented. Metal merely makes a game feel shallow and self pitying.

Here's a good example of both:

Classical

Personally I prefer the classical, it adds a creepy contrast between the music and what's actually going on like in Fallout 3.

Either one works for me, but I've been in a classical kick lately. I suppose more upbeat quick paced classical works with FPS.

I suppose by "Classical" he meant classical arrangements with orchestral instruments, which is what God of War did.

I am so tired of over-blown orchestral scores, as good as orchestra music can be, it never recaptures that same level of excitement as melody driven battle music. All the most lauded soundtracks of all time feature melody driven music. but Personally, I really like both metal and classical, I love Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles its soundtrack was amazing, but I also like when games pick up the sound track into metal, or heavy electronic. Like the running scenes in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within really stand out.

Ugh... I hate when people feel the need to stick YouTube links in their reply to get their point across... especially Final Fantasy videos. At this point, anything you know Nobuo Uematsu has composed is going to be a mixed bag. Case in point, the Final Fantasy Overture versus "Eternity" featuring Deep Purple's Ian Gillan from Blue Dragon.

Likewise, I don't expect an onslaught of Heavy Metal tracks in a game like Metal Gear Solid nor would I appreciate it because it's the complete antithesis of that franchise's particular orchestrated sound.

The genre of music best suited for in-game combat solely depends on the aesthetics and theme of the game. And if you're like most people who play MMO's, you turn off the in-game music and supply your own soundtrack.

I think Orchestral is a better word ofr what you mean. Anyway, it's better in the context of most video, mainly because you can do a lot more with an orchestra (in terms of atmosphere and scale) than a relitivly metal small band. And to a lesser degree, most rock/metal in games suck in my opinion anyway.

Of course, you can do some impressive things with a lisensed sound track, but for the kind of game that'll have a lot of combat, go with the orchestra.

Why separate the two when you can mix them? I love symphonic metal...
This. So very very VERY this.

Plus cheesy power metal about slaying your enemies [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UonQn2X3d5g] and wielding magic [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgUhtFxeFBM] swords [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye6YHQ8AZzU] can be hilariously fitting at times.

There's even songs to create a warlike feel [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VXIqApNvr0]

Congrats on posting songs from all the bands I love.
