Xenoblade Chronicles for sure. Worth all of the $50 I spent on it. Kept me gripped for 80 hours and it was fun to explore the vast landscape. Sure the close-up animation kinda looks like ass, but it's a small price to pay.

The World Ends With You was pretty damn good too. Loved the visual style, even if the dual-screen combat was a bit dodgy. Perhaps the best thing Square Enix has made this generation.

Well, there are a variety of JRPG's to choose from.

Last gen would be KH for adventure/hack n' slash, Final Fantasy X for turn based.

This gen would be Dragon's Dogma for adventure/hack n' slash, Lost Odyssey for turn based.

Story-based: TWEWY.

Gameplay-based: Dark Souls.

Honorable Mention: Dragon's Dogma has a lot of flaws, but its best aspects are good enough that I expect some future game that builds on it and fixes what's broken will be my favorite RPG ever.

Persona 3 Portable as the Female Protagonist. Extra Social Links with all of the playable teammates made a huge difference. Some of the best dialogue choices in an RPG I've seen.

As someone else who has played the PS3 version of Vesperia, i would AT LEAST recommend playing the 360 version, it's what got me into the Tales series.

There's no contest. Xenoblade Chronicles is the best jrpg that came out for the current generation. That game is worth every penny, is addictive as all, has great characters, gripping music, a fantastic plot... I loved every part of that game.

Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma

The atmosphere in Dark Souls is dark and oppressive, and you get the notion that just about everything in the game hates you and want you dead. Also due to the "difficulty" there's a nice sense of accomplishment when you finally take down a boss.

Dragon's Dogma on the other hand was a one of those games to just pick up and play for an hour or two. Jump on a Cyclops and stab it in the junk a few times and, oh yeah... Fight dragons by climbing on top of them and stabbing the in the heart. It has it's flaws, but it is a solid game if you can look past a few of those things.

I wasn't a big fan of Lost Odyssey, though everyone I see is always saying it is awesome, I have tried two times to play through and always wind up quitting and playing something else (my most recent play through the last thing I remember was like a swamp that kept poisoning you or something?). I found the Thousand Years of Dreams to be great though, I'd rather just read all those than actually play the game (I remember a few really good ones still, like the people travelling through the desert against the wind, or the one where you're in a prison in the dark and finally get released). Jansen (or was it Jensen?) was a fun character too, but everything else just felt like a slog to me.

OP: I'd say either Eternal Sonata, or Tales of Vesperia, both were absolutely beautiful (especially Sonata), and had fun combat systems. Eternal Sonata was more quirky and unusual, while Vesperia was a bit more serious, but I found both to be very compelling.

Edit: I guess I will give honourable mention to the Souls games, they are fantastic, but while they are technically RPGs and were made in Japan, I don't really think of them as JRPGs.

Well, there's Tales of Vesperia (I haven't finished Tales of Graces F yet so I withhold my judgement) which is probably my favourite. However I also greatly enjoyed The Last Story Xenoblade and Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World.

I don't play alot of JRPG's, japanese like their particular brand of stereotypical characters and it kind of annoys me but I will say that I was really enjoying Lost Odyssey right up until the point my 360 red ringed on me and then I loaned it to a friend never to get it back. It reminded me of the best qualities of the Final Fantasy games while doing some actual interesting twists of their own without being gimmicky. I usually am never a fan of JRPG main characters in particular but Kaim really got me in the gut. Starting out as the typical silent broody character and then flipping it on its head up to the point I had to stop.

Xenoblade Chronicles easily.

Nier coming a close second.

I don't like to lump the handhelds with the consoles. But the 3/DS has some great titles. PSV would too if they bothered to put the PSP ones on the shop.

I haven't played a lot of JRPG's this gen but I remember going on a stint of those Carpe Fulgur localized JRPGS, Chantelise, Recettear and Fortune Summoner and really enjoying them.

I haven't had a chance to play the others yet, despite picking them up in various sales, but Recettear was surprisingly great. Capitalism, ho!

I'll also probably get some funny looks for how high up on my list I'd put The Last Remnant. I know there are some things fundamentally wrong with the game, but the PC version fixed a lot of the stuff that was broken in the console version, and I liked a lot of the weird stuff they tried in it that some people didn't. It was at least nice to see Squeenix doing something interesting and different for a change like they used to, instead of stuff like Final Fantasy All the Bravest Final Fantasy Fuck You Give Me Money.

Valkaria Chronicles

A very nice surprise.
Damn. How did I forget about Valkaria Chronicles. Now it is a tie between that and Lost Odyssey.
