Why didn't In Bruges win an Oscar? It was fantastic dammit.
Agreed.
I saw it for the first time a few days ago on TV, and then I saw The American last night, and I wish I had just watched In Bruges again.

I didn't care for In Bruges and I'm a little biased towards The Dark Knight since I love all things Batman but Children of Men was definitely robbed. I can't even remember what won that year but I can guarantee it wasn't as good.
QFT, I don't even have to look at what the winner atcully was to know that Children of Men was robbed. One of the most original, inovatively shot, harrowing, emotional films to come out this decade. Everything about the film is pure film making perfection, one of the best opening scenes I think I've ever seen. Before you even see anything the voice over tells you everything you need to know to set up the film:
"Day 1000 of the siege of Seatle."
"The Muslim comunity demands an end to the army's ocupation of mosques"
"The security bill is ratified, after 8 years the British borders will remain closed. The deportation of illegal imigrants will continue."

And then the big one, "The world was stunned today by the death of Diego Ricardo, the youngest person on the planet."

Right there that tells you that someting is dreadfully wrong, that this is a broken world. Zero footage, 30 seconds of voiceover and the scene is perfectly set for what is one of best political science fiction films in modern times.

EDIT: You know what see it for yourselves.

You guys can name a couple of movies that got robbed at the Oscars in the past 3 years. I personally thought that District 9 was robbed last year by Hurt Locker. And that Slumdog Millionaire was shit, and Dark Knight shouldve won then. But, I want to hear your opinions.
I disagree I thought that Hurt Locker was better than District 9 I liked both movies though. Never saw Slumdog Millionaire so I can't really comment on that but I really don't care what movies win what awards its all a popularity contest.

I probably am biased against Slumdog Millionaire because I am Indian. It just seems that thats how everyone views India in the world and thats not how its really like there.
And District 9 isn't like it is here, but I still enjoyed the film in its own right. Hell, I enjoyed it even the its apparent social commentary is years to late.

Edit: let me qualify that original statement better. The whole alien thing obviously isn't happening in South Africa right now. The crime rates are massively high. Xenophobia is in a decline, but it was/is real. In that, the film is correct. However, you don't see this everywhere, and to be honest our biggest issues cannot be seen, directly at least, in the streets, and they are not even touched on by the film. District 9's commentary caught onto an already diminishing issue in South Africa. To be honest it is little more then a action film now, though, that being said, it is a very good action film.
I'm sorry, but I've got to point this out: Xenophobia? On a decline? You do realize that the President of Zimbabwe is pushing for the removal for any white person, even a locally born white person, to own or operate a business throughout his country, right? That's just a little bit Xenophobic.

OT: Equilibrium. That movie deserved so much more than it got.

Inglorious Bastards should have had the Oscar. None of the other movies even came close. Hurt Locker was good, but was very inaccurate and while District 9 was a great movie, it still wasn't as good as Bastards.
I am glad that Christoph Waltz got the Oscar he deserved though.

Moon, seriously. The film wasn't nominated for any Oscars. That film was the best I had seen in years.

Though I will admit I did think The Dark Knight was overrated.

I agree, those movies were so goddamn good, but the acadamy like all orginizations tends to not make the best decisions. Not to say that the winners weren't good, of the ones I've seen I think that they are very good movies, but they weren't good enough to win given the competition they had, like District 9 or the Dark Knight.

Not really bothered, here's some decent films that didn't win.

Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, Citizen Kane, Blade Runner, Dr. Strangelove, Bonnie and Clyde and Vertigo.

I'd give them a look.

I'm referring to the South African Xenophobia attacks specifically. Mugabe's actions also stem more from racism then Xenophobia, seeing as most of the white people are Zimbabwean born.

District 9 should have won in place of The Hurt Locker.

Aside from that, I'm still particularly bitter that Mickey Rourke was robbed of his Oscar in '08.

I'll say The Dark Knight, even though everyone else already has, because it's simply a disgrace that it didn't even nominated for Best Picture. It ought to have won. It was the best film of that year, and, while Slumdog Millionaire was good, it didn't hold a candle to TDK. I honestly think that if a film had been made with a plot identical to TDK, but with a renegade police officer instead of Batman and a regular serial killer instead of the Joker, it would have won. The Academy just doesn't think a film starring a guy in a cape deserves to be taken seriously, and that's very, very sad.

The other big film from the last few years which was wrongfully ignored, from the same year as TDK, no less, is:

Gran Torino :(
One of the finest films of Clint Eastwood's career (and that's saying a lot), and it didn't get nominated for a single award. I simply can't understand this; it seems like just the kind of film the Academy would like, apart from anything else. The Dark Knight deserved to win Best Picture, but Gran Torino ought to have been nominated. At least it was named one of the Top Ten Films of 2008 by the National Board of Review.

Colin Farrell is a god.
As long as we ignore Alexander. For the record though, In Bruges is awesome. If nothing else, it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

I think The Dark Knight would have had more of a look in if the bit with 2 face didn't exist at the end, and they saved it for a new film, it just dragged the movie on... other than that I LOVED TDK, and it so fulfilled my Heath Ledger fangirlness :)

But then again... the Oscars wouldn't give it to a graphic novel based film, its full of bias and fulfilling expectation, such as Halle Berry's oscar, I haven't seen Monster's Ball, but I'm pretty confidant she cant perform to an Oscar standard, it was just time for a black woman to get a prize...
