Carnival of Souls. It is one of the creepiest and unsettling thrillers I've ever seen. It's like The Sixth Sense meets Psycho.

Well, some of the best films ever made were made before CGI, I allready saw someone mention One flew over a cuckoo's nest and A Clockwork Orange (which is probably my alltime favourite film), here are a few other of my picks:

C'est arrive pres de chez vous
Cache
Pulp Fiction
The Shining
Fargo
Goodfellas
Smoke
Chinatown
Stalker
If...
Eyes wide shut

Monty Python!
Which monty python are you talking about? The holy grail had a few special effects including the famous killer rabbit.
Of the Monty Python films I've seen, none are heavily independent on special effects. Also, I thought the killer rabbit was a puppet...

Why compromise? Why not have both? CGI can be a way to tell a story. What if the story was to be set on the back of a snake flying through space, Special Effect are most definitly needed.
It would be great for a movie to have both, it's just that I see so many movies where they have compromised a good story for better CGI.
Having both would be lovely, but I'm not going to count on it happening for a lot of movies.

Though I was pretty impressed with the new Star Trek movie, and I'm not a huge fan of the franchise either.
You really wouldn't believe how many movies have CGI. Which is why I'm suprised half the movies here are posted. Little things like fitting a camera through a gap too small to make a really cool tracking shot can all be fixed with CGI. It's great, amazing. You have to stop thinking movies like Transformers or most Hollywood really. Those movies are made by people who go after the $$$. So the story was never compromised for CGI as there was no story to begin with.
You have to remember, the scripts were made first. The story was either good or bad to begin with.

They all had Special Effects. As for Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and Fight Club, I know these had CGI. Fight Club, maybe. Makes sense to do so. But it would have had a lot of post production editing.

Also known as Special Effects. Guys head got hacked off in that scene too. A giant wooden rabbit fell onto a guy, cow launched in the air, and the Black Knight was torn assunder. SFX (I feel strange for writing it that way cause it could also mean Sound Effects) don't have to be CGI.

Jurassic Park!
Oh ho ho! I get it, because Jurassic Park has lots of special effects!

/sarcasm

For recent movies, I'd have to go with Slumdog Millionaire. For all movies...give me some time to think.

American Beauty.

One of the best movies I have ever seen and the only special effect (I can remember...) is at the very end of the movie. I couldn't say without spoiling it for anyone.

Remember the Titans. In general, I prefer fantasy/sci-fi movies, but that's one of the few outside of the genre that appealed to me.

Anything by Robert Rodriguez, especially the Mariachi trilogy. Sure, he uses some CGI in Once Upon A Time In Mexico, but he always cleverly disguises it and uses it extremely sparingly.

Has anyone suggested the original Halloween yet?
