I would say the Total War series, but only the OST composed by Jeff van Dyck for Rome Total War and Medieval II Total War. The music there was just damn good, fit everything perfectly.
OH GOD YES!!!

I can't really decide on one favorite song, so I'll cheat a bit and name a few of my favorite soundtracks. The following are just examples from each track:

The Neverhood

Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2

Tie Fighter

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

Pretty much the entire Halo series

I can't choose, honestly. I really haven't thought about it enough to pick a favorite. But there are a few games of special note where the music is interesting, yet blends well and doesn't distract. The Legend of Zelda series has always been on top of this in my opinion. Others include Oblivion, both StarCrafts, and the Halo series. There are more, but it's late and I really can't be bothered.

I would like the Halo soundtracks as well, but they're really only one or two songs remixed 12 ways. You can only play the Mjolnir Mix so many times before it loses its novelty.

Anyway, I'll vote for Mass Effect like so many before me, for the same reasons (Faunts, suicide mission, Vigil, etc.). Here's a gem that I've posted before, that still remains awesome.

Tie Fighter
HOLY SHIT NOSTALGIA!
Always nice to find a fellow fan.

Yeah, I remember playing the DOS version on my parents' old 486. I foolishly gave it away when we got our first computer that didn't have a floppy drive. Luckily a friend of mine let me have his Collector's CD version. I still play it thanks to the wonders of DOSBox.

That dynamic iMuse music always gets me pumped during missions. Too bad the re-releases ditched it in favor of looped audio from the movies.

Halo, loads of people may hate it, but you have to admit, it has a badass soundtrack.

I Don't know why but Japanese games in general tend to have better soundtracks:
Most any Final Fantasy,
ANY SMT game,
Anything by clover(Godhand, Viewtiful Joe especially Okami)
Guilty Gear and Blaz Blue
and those are just for startes

As for western games:
Halo,
Red Dead Redemption,
Duke Nukem
Most anything from Bioware.

Completely agree with the above. Best soundtracks ever. Also the Metal Gear Solid: Tactical Espionage soundtrack is epic.

Slightly suprised Brutal Legend hasn't been mentioned yet. The soundtrack was the entire point of the game really.
