I would have to say Tales of Vesperia. I remember playing the first time after I beat what I thought was the final boss, turns out I was only a third of the way through the game. But Golden Sun: The Lost Age does take a close second.

Pokemon First Generation or Dragon Age 8.

I want to play Persona 3 and 4 so bad. I keep hearing that they're good.
Thank god that a used PS2 will only set someone back about $50-$70 and both recent Persona games are only about $15-$20 thanks in part to Atlus being awesome and releasing FES at only $30.

If you are a fan of JRPGs, then you owe it to yourself to buy either 3:FES or 4 and enjoy the hell out of it. They are some of the best JRPGs in recent memory.

The world ends with you. Hands down.

It just did so many things fresh, and a battle system that invoked a gleeful grin rather then a groan when you hit a encounter.

Lost Odyssey, fantastic game in my opinion. Had some excellent characters and felt very epic.

It certainly made me empathise with the characters which is a job well done in my book.
Lost Odyssey is just the best jrpg ever.

I dont like how it says "best NON Final Fantasy game" because Lost Odyssey is far far superior to Final Fantasy.

Plenty of candidates, but I always felt Breath of Fire 3 to be underrated because it came out during the FFVII era when everyone was trying to make their own 3D JRPG. Rei and Teepo forever.

I love me some Breath of Fire III to this day, the whole series really.
I thought I was the only one. I literally just played Breath of Fire 3 (again) like a month ago. Easily one of my favorite RPGs. And I played it around the same time as FF7. I liked it in a different way, I guess.

There are a whole ton of PSOne era JRGs that are just awesome. The PSOne RPGs were my first time ever playing RPGs and I love a ton of them.

How has no one said Legend of Legaia!? A deep combat system and the most unique magic system I can think of in just about any game.

Glad to know people think so highly of it. I bought it on a whim last time I was at Gamespot but haven't started it since I'm in the middle of Resonance Of Fate and enjoying it way too much to stop now. As soon as I beat Resonance, it's the first thing in my 360.

All I've played is Pokemon Yellow, so I guess that is where my vote goes.

Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time. Another big one for me was the Golden Sun games and World Ends with you. There way better than any Final Fantasy, in fact I've never considered any of the numbered Final Fantasys all that great, there pretty over rated.

I think it was more, "Best JRPG, no Final Fantasy answers allowed." Could be wrong...

I have to second the Star Ocean games. Story notwithstanding (I started with 2, and it's far from my favorite JRPG story but I still loved the hell out of the game), the games' combat systems are some of the most addicting things I've ever played. SO3 stands as the only game where I've ever put more than 100 hours into one save file.

Golden sun, or any tales game basically ever. Tales games basically get me through the day haha. but tales of symphonia and tales of versperia were my favorites by far. They were the only games i have beaten multiple times and enjoyed them each time.

Yeah, probably. Final Fantasy would be far to easy an answer for most people.

Get the tissues ready for disk 2.

Glad to know.

If a game can get you so emotionally involved with it's characters that you are forced to reach for the tissues at major plot points, I'd say that's the sign of a great game.
