Well, I vote for Terranigma! Close behind, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Tales of Symphonia ... but to be honest, every game mentioned until now is incredible good and worth to be played.

Lost Odyssey, fantastic game in my opinion. Had some excellent characters and felt very epic.

It certainly made me empathise with the characters which is a job well done in my book.
Lost Odyssey is just the best jrpg ever.

I dont like how it says "best NON Final Fantasy game" because Lost Odyssey is far far superior to Final Fantasy.
Glad to know people think so highly of it. I bought it on a whim last time I was at Gamespot but haven't started it since I'm in the middle of Resonance Of Fate and enjoying it way too much to stop now. As soon as I beat Resonance, it's the first thing in my 360.
Get the tissues ready for disk 2.
Glad to know.

If a game can get you so emotionally involved with it's characters that you are forced to reach for the tissues at major plot points, I'd say that's the sign of a great game.
I have never in my life even been close to misty eyed whilst playing a game but in one scene on disk 2 is like an emotional mallet to the face.

...Golden Sun...
No, scratch that. Golden Sun: The Lost Age...
Need I say more?
Really? I preferred the first one. I just felt like the second one was too open to the point where I had no idea where I should be going.

Tales of Symphonia.

Well, best JRPG on the GameCube, at any rate. The voice acting was a little hokey, but at least it was better than the *non-existent* sequel!
Although, I'm going to have to agree with this. ToS is amazing. Too bad it never got a sequel.

kingdom hearts *****. i fucking love those games.
Can't help find at least a bit funny that you swear mentioning what's basically a disney game made by a japanese company XD

As to what is the best non FF JRPG... I've got to say the Shin Megami Tensei Series. Particularily SMT Nocturne. For those who aren't jaded, there's always the Tales Series. Eternia's my favorite.

I had a lot of fun with the Legend of Dragoon and Tales of Vesperia. Golden Sun was great, too. I don't consider the Pokémon games to be JRPGs, but if you do, more power to you.

Probably Chrono Trigger.

To give a less generic response, though, Tales of Symphonia is one of the Gamecube greats.

We all know final fantasy is considered by many to be the finest RPG series out there
Um... I didn't. Unless I somehow traveled back in time to 1997. Are people still worshiping Final Fantasy that much? It seems like more and more people are declaring FF to be ruined FOREVER with each new game ever since VIII.

Well, regardless of my current time, the two best RPGs ever are Persona 3 and The World Ends With You.

I don't really have a number one so here is my list.

Tales of
Lunar
Legend of Legaia
Legend of the Dragoon
Grandia
Wild Arms
Legend of Zelda

What?

Oh yeah and the Persona series I hear is rather smashing, though I think having the (beep) (beep) at the (beep) contradicts the whole point of an RPG. Then again I feel the same way about (beep) (beep) (beep).
