I love RTS for the most part, granted I'm not that great at them but I'm far from the worst and I've played a hand full of ones that were not well publicized. I'd like to here some of them from fellow RTS lovers.

If you guys haven't done so already I suggest people try out the game Spellforce 2. While it has its problems its gameplay more then makes up for it and its hours of fun.

TBS- I'd go with the original Ages of Wonder that game was pure epic sauce.

SW: Empire at war was quite good. Ground combat was a tad slow but with an auto-resolve it was fine. The space combat was great fun, especially with the expansion pack.
Also Majesty, and older game which is unique in the way it does things. Instead of controlling units there are adventurers running around and you offer them rewards for tasks, like killing certain monsters. Well worth checking out.

Total Annihilation.

Too few people I've talked to have heard of it, much less played it. If you haven't played it, purchase it immediately, you will not regret it.

Not a huge fan of the RTS genre, but Impossible Creatures is not that well known, I think, and it's my favorite. You essentially get to build your units however you want, which was the draw for me. Want more stealth units? Go for it. Artillery? Just a few clicks here and there. Giant ants? You know it.

Stronghold was an amazing RTS game IMO. Graphics weren't that great, but the combat and castle building elements of the game were outstanding.

The thing with the expansion(and don't get me wrong, I still love it, and would be playing it now if I didn't lose the first disk) was the Zann faction, I felt, was overpowered.

Although, you can get both games in a combo pack for twenty bucks. A sweet deal if I say so myself.

I'd say Empire at War and Sins of a Solar Empire. Both excellent, if somewhat overshadowed, RTSs.

Maybe but I still regard them as the most fun to play with. I haven't played multiplayer with it much so I'm not sure how it compares too well.
Also, if you still have the game installed on your pc, why not just crack it? (Legal, provided you bought the game.)

Well, of course it's the most fun to play with the best faction :p. I enjoy the Empire more myself.

Alas, it was installed on my old PC, so I can't crack it.

Star Trek: Armada. Although the game did have a number of flaws, I thought the single player campaign story was extremely well done. Besides, playing as the Borg was great.

Never got into this, I was way too horrible at building ships and not dying in the first battle.

OT: I would have to say that all the RTS games I play are pretty well known, mostly just C&C, Age of Empires/Mythology and Starcraft.

Definitely worth it, if you can find a copy anywhere. The single player campaign is far from astounding and the status messages can get really, really annoying at times, but being able to make custom units is definitely awesome. Nothing says, "You're going to die," quite like a killer whale with a scorpion's tail, claws, and legs walking up the shore and laying waste to someone's base.

Majesty deserves mention here since a sequel was just released days ago. You don't actually control your units yourself but try to entice the heroes to do what you want via rewards and manipulating their personalities.

If you still have it, I found a trick to kill your own ships. Send them into an asteriod field, or the enemy space station. Usually works. Those were my favorite parts of the game, especially wathing in the cinimatics point of view. It was hella fun.

SW:Empire at War was awesome just for the space battles. Ground combat wasn't spectacular, but fucking over the Imperial Fleet was some of the most fun I've ever had in an RTS.
