Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Its categorized as an RTT not an RTS, but it is similar enough I guess. The scripting is pretty buggy in the game but the engine itself works great, looks beautiful, and has some really fun gameplay.

Total Annihilation without a shadow of a doubt.

Homeworld. You may argue it is well-known amongst gamer communities like these forums but most people haven't heard of it.
Yes and yes.
Total Annihilation was amazing. I loved it way way more then Starcraft.
And Homeworld was/is just phenomenal. I haven't played a better RTS for LAN parties. Epic.
Homeworld really does rock. I played Homeworld 2 first so I prefer that one, but either one is a great choice.

Battlezone was a PC RTS which involved creating tank factories, manufacturing buildings, units, weapons, strategically placing them to defend yourself from the enemy, who were pretty much on the same level.

However, there's a twist. You are not some God who hovers half a kilometre over the battlefield. You are a commander, down on the battlefield, in your own tank with first person view. Suddenly, defending from the enemy is quite different. They could come from behind any one of those craters, but if you poke your head over them, you could get your face blasted in by AT - STABs.

And attacking the enemy is very, very different indeed. Nothing can compare to assembling your army brimming with tanks, nimble scout ships covering the flanks, dotted with the odd towering mech. Well, okay, that happens in a lot of RTSs. But you're down there with them! You partake in the mindless slaughtering of the enemy base, of blowing them out their tanks and then blasting their vulnerable little retreating selves into giblets.

The best part, however, is having your ship destroyed. Because once you do, you eject about 30 metres high into the air. If you survive the landing, you can take your armour-piercing railgun with heat vision, take aim at an enemy craft and snipe the pilot in the heart, upon which you hijack their craft.

*I AM WELL AWARE THIS PROBABLY ISN'T THE ONLY FPS RTS EVER CREATED, AND I AM AWARE THAT SOME OF THIS STUFF YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN BEFORE AND THIS GAME IS 67984 YEARS OLD

also outlive

Anyone ever heard of Dominant Species? It was also an FPS/RTS, and it was best at making me hate it and how difficult I found it (I was incredibly young and shit at that point though, so maybe it's turned good). Like Battlezone it is also a gazillion years old.

My best has to be Outlive, the most obscure and most awesomeist Brazilian game ever created (it's in English so don't worry). I loved it, even if it was bollocksing hard.

Stronghold Crusader. It was OK in gameplay, but it really wins you over with the laughably stupid cutscenes of leaders named after animals.
