The original Ground Control was a really neat game that did a lot of things differently from its peers, and was much better than its far-inferior sequel.

Stronghold was an amazing RTS game IMO. Graphics weren't that great, but the combat and castle building elements of the game were outstanding.
yes yes yes^

and the new one is pretty good too

OT:
i enjoyed warzone 2100
site is here
http://wz2100.net/
the game has been open sourced and these people have been making it better for lack of a better word/phrase

EDIT dont know if this counts but wargames was good cept for you could rush right in with a jeep or motor cycle and drop an airstike on the enemy

Lords of Magic was delicious, especialy the expansion where you could take up villages of other civilizations and make their types of units for your side,

there was a shitty aliens vs predator RTS that came out for the old xbox years ago.

It sucks to be the marines (though DoW seemingly stole the concept of "resource point" capture from this game)

It sucks to be the predators

But when you are the aliens, you drag bodies of the other team back to your base and lay eggs next to them to breed more units.

Best RTS battles ever.

I've quite a list:
> Haegemonia: Legions of Iron, about the 20th time I've mentioned how good I think it is in 9 months since getting it.
> Warzone 2100, it's just brilliant, design units, fun, good story, all the pieces are there.
> Total Annihilation, excellent game, and in my opinion the father of modding.
> Rise of Nations, I've not spoke to many that have played it.
> Star trek: Armada II, good stand alone game and with some of it's mods, like realistic sizes, becomes a monster!

Total Annihilation.

Too few people I've talked to have heard of it, much less played it. If you haven't played it, purchase it immediately, you will not regret it.
I LOVED THAT GAME.

Seriously, so much fun.... robots blasting each other on a widescale battle, good stuff.

For me, I gotta go Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction, only because someone beat me to Total Annihilation.

Rise of Naitons: Rise of Legends. It is one of the best little-known RTS games I have ever played!

Hey, Total Annihibots - why is TA worth playing over SupCom? Over Spring?
Honest question. I haven't played any of them though I have an unopened SupCom DVD sitting in my big pile o'games.

Oh, and "Slaves to Armok - God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress" is a pretty good RTS, I hear.

There's a TA spring project so if I were you I'd just download that (free). My friend like Supcom a lot so I think it's a pretty good RTS.

I personally don't think it is.

I love TA, and Spring has an incredible amount of potential with all the mods and such, but SupCom (especially SupCom:FA)'s interface hands down makes it worth playing more than TA most of the time. Even though the economy system is a bit whacked out with the adjacency bonus, SupCom2 is gonna remove that.

But anyway, I was going to say TA but people obviously beat me to it, so maybe I'll go with Mythical Warriors.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds was pretty fun. Not many people I know have heard of it (or they confuse it with Empire at War for whatever reason).

The battles could sometimes get really big and complex, but it's major flaw was that there were just way too many resources to farm, and some of them were only good for one or two good units, yet you needed a lot.
