Cortana, Canderous Ordo
I don't think you can really count Cortana as an NPC, since you didn't physically see her outside of cutscenes.
Yes you do. Once in Halo 2. When Masterchief is teleported onto High Charity, after you defeat the Covenant in the room. You put her down on one of those holo-platforms next to the door and she unlocks it. After the cutscene, where that happens, she is still there until you go through both sets of doors.

In Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, I really liked Beckett, the loner Gangrel historian. He didn't want to double-cross or use you like pretty much everyone else in the game, always told you interesting stuff, and had an awesome voice actor and sweet glasses. He was lacking a moustache, however (can vampires grow 'staches?).

Hells yes. He needs to return, hopefully atop a pile of dead headcrabs. My next choice for greatest NPC would be Griggs and Sheckley from Episode 2. They're hilarious. Oh, and then all the Vortigaunts with their fugly badassery and green lightning. And the majority of the human rebels with their cynical nature and bad jokes. Hell, the entire resistance is awesome. Except for Magnusson. He's kind of a dick.

GMan. Oh yeah.
After reading many posts, thinking to myself about what the best one is, I saw this and knew. Gman rocks. A mysterious, well dressed man with a creepy presence and an odd speech impediment that is controlling the events in a mute nerd's action-packed life, who you can always see in the corner of your eye (or maybe you are just looking too hard) Gman ftw!

Edwin from Baldur's Gate 1&2.

´"krhm, yes, I have a task for you. I would like to travel with you to place X (And kill you on the way if I get the chance)"

"Ummm, yes, we CAN hear you, you know. Plotting to kill us isn't exactly wise you know..."

"Kill you? No no, while my arcane powers certainly could do that withoout any chance of failiure, I wouldn't do that. (Besides, it's not like your simian brains know anything of wisdom or true power. Yes, yes, you idiots will do nicely...)"

"Well gee, you know, I think I hear our bard causing a rucus at that tavern over there so we'll just..."

Oh, and HK-47:"He requests proof of our peaceful intentions. Shall I blast him now master?"

"Gleeful statement: In enclosed spaces, such as this cantina, use of are-of-effect weapons, such as grenades, is recommended for maximum carnage and civilian casualties. Shall I prime a few thermal detonators, master?"

"Whenever I think I have seen to the bottom of human cruelty, you do something so entirely unexpected and evil that it leaves me analyzing the implications for days! Such actions are enough to make my behavioral core glow from excitement! You are like a delightful random cruelty generator, Master, poisoning everything with your touch."

Best npc's ever are the Bioshock splicers. Who doesn't love an enemy who screams the bible while trying to castrate you with a rusty hook. (honerable mention goes to Cole from gears of war, it's the COLE train baby!)

hehe has to be an NPC named Gareth in Fable 2, a trip to bowerstone isnt complete with that perverted stalker coming up to me and trying to make me come to bed, his favourite line is
"i had seafood earlier, you know what that means...lets find a bed"
and he seriously follows me around whenever im there

also i like the NPC's in Overlord

Cpt MacMillan. I dunno why, I just love the mission with him :D
It's clearly because he's scottish. and not a stereotypical scot either, but a proper, beleivable scotsman. I'll go with captain Mcmillan also.
