You know those moments where you're bumbling along through a game, having a fairly good time, when all of a sudden the plot just turns around a gives you a massive slap round the face?

Those moments when a storyline you thought was nice and straight and stick-like is suddenly all writhing and snakelike?

Or when that storyline you thought was already writhing and snakelike turns out to be even writhier and snakier than you thought possible?

Like when completely out of the blue you find out the big bad guy you're fighting turns out to be your own soul and that defeating him means destroying yourself? Or that breaking that plot important Crystal to save the world has actually doomed it?

Yeah, those moments. Enough exposition, what's your favourite one? :p

[Edit] This will pprrrooobbbaabbblllyyy get quite Spoilertastic now that I think about it. You've been warned!

When I started fighting albino cannibal monsters with an MP40 in Drakes Fortune came pretty close for me.

The first time I ever pulled off an exploding headshot in Fallout 3

When I crashed my PS2 by causing too many explosions in GTA3.

Most of the Ronin Storyline in Saints Row 2 is pretty "oh snap!" ish.

Yeah, I think Bioshock had a lot of oh snap moments for me. The ending of Crackdown was a bit of a slap in the face too, but not as big of one. I think Bioshock's was so good because after the first big one, the twists started coming one after another in a never ending stream. There's also the post-ending of Halo 3, by which I mean Bungie's response to people asking if the cliffhanger meant Halo 4, and they said they had intended the Halo trilogy to be a prologue to the Marathon trilogy, meaning that the player in Marathon was controlling the Master Chief (sorry I can't cite it, it was in an old episode of a podcast I stopped listening to)

Star wars force commander. Not very popular. Not very good either. Story was total crap.

Definitely Bioshock, I had to stop playing for a bit and collect myself when
I saw the scene where Ryan offs himself, and you find out that Atlas is Fonatine.

To me one of the most powerful storytelling moments in a game.

System Shock 2. Deck 4. Polito's office.

Damn.
I second that 'Damn.' Along with an additional 'You manipulative bee-hatch....' aimed at someone in particular because of it.

The final ending bit of Fallout I found as one too:
When the Overseer basically thanks you for saving the vault etc etc, then tells you to bugger off because you're not the same person any more.
The first time I finished Fallout my character was a relatively nice guy...but that didn't stop him from pulverizing his bee-hind with a Power Fist soon after he let that bombshell loose.

How has no one put Assassin's Creed in here? That ending was a bitchslap from here to eternity! Not to mention, a pretty severe "OH SNAP" moment...

What did you expect to happen in the end o_O? The fact that you were going to kill your mentor in the end was no surprise. Figured that out the first time I saw the guy. And the guy in the present was a f*g.

FFVII had a decent one:
Cloud actually DID kill Sephiroth in Nibelheim, simply through the fact that he didn't feel like opening up combat with a lengthy conversation of taunts with his enemy. RUN -> STAB -> KILL

Phoenix Wright seems to have one in every single case, because the whole gameplay is based around story. Some cases are so well-written, you won't know WHAT to believe until the very end.

Bioshock and KOTOR are my all time best, but Gears of War 2 had the best ones as of late.

I feel a massive de ja vue moment, but oh well, my momont would have to be when I was sniping in a game, ran out of bullets, ducked down to reload, and got sniped in the head just moments before my head was completly covered. kudos to the guy who got me, but since he was right next to me, I was able to yell a few obscinities at him while he was laughing his head off

I'll go ahead and get the Final Fantasy fanboy stuff going. Seriously though, the death of one of the main characters in FF VII took me by surprise the first run-through of the game. Still grips me when I play it over again.

EDIT: The aforementioned spoiler surrounding Sephiroth was good as well. Missed that skimming through. >.>
