So I was thinking about where I would like to live when I get older the other day and I've settled on somewhere in Europe.

I don't really know why, I just love the European countries despite only having been to 2, Spain and England.

So, naturally being that the majority of the Escapist seem to be from Europe, I come to the Escapist for an answer as to what is the best European country, city or village to live in.

I'm from the UK soon to be moving to Sweden. But if you were to pick somewhere i'd vote Austria or Scandinavia.

Of the places I've been, there are only two I'd go to again - the Irish countryside (scenery, nice people, can always find a pub), and Venice (scenery again, culture, ice cream).

Depends entirely what you want to do.

I'm a big fan of Prague. (History, beauty, music, the czech language and literature.) Within the UK, Sheffield's my favourite place. (Friends, the people, the music scene, the pubs, the Peak district being an hour's walk away.)

Crete!

Nicest place, nicest people, best weather and food. It would be even better if Malia (aka rape central) just disappeared.

I quite like living in England though, for all it's many faults it's a nice place to live.

Germany! It is an absolutely beautiful country! And the people there are quite nice as well :D
I really want to go to the town of Bernkastel (Bernkastel-Kues). It is so beautiful...
And some mighty fine wines are from there :D
Italy is also beautiful, but I'm in love with Germany.

The political and social climate is best in Scandinavia, I suggest Norway in particular. Germany has a very stable and sound economy, with a rather secure labour market. Luxembourg has one of the highest salary levels in the world. Switzerland runs according to a unique democratic system where you have referendums in all important issues. The UK has the advantage of using the English language, which means you won't have to learn a new one. It depends on what you're looking for, really. Personally, I would definetly go with Norway. Seeing as you're from the US, however, it might feel a little too rural for you.

Places to avoid: The Balkans, Italy, the Baltic states and most of eastern Europe... And Spain, to some extent. Their economy is on the verge of collapse, and politically as well as economically they're still trying to make up for 35 years of fascist dictatorship.

The only downsides I can see with Norway are that it's very rural, and that they speak norwegian. It's a terribly ugly language. Other than that, they've got a very admirable political system, a very sound economy, a great social security net, very high salaries and overall a high quality of life.

Edit: As a general rule... The further north in Europe you go, the better it gets.

Denmark

A country that doesn't really seem to be involved in the shadier goings-on in the world.

Although, it did spawn the Mohammed cartoon. But I love it for that.

I would probably have suggested my own homeland (Iceland) since we have some of the best living standards in the world and really pretty woman if it weren't for the fact that as of lately our economy has gone to shit.
Agreed. Iceland would also have been a good choice, up until 2009. Economics aside, however, Iceland remains a very pleasant destination.

You could do better than Denmark, really. Their political climate right now is a little disconcerting. They're not involved in the shadier goings-on of the world because they have their own shady dealings to attend to. The police and government both are getting increasingly oppressive, and you really don't want to go there as an immigrant. Nationalist sentiment is strong there right now.

I'd say: "Don't try Belgium!"
They make you pay too much for internet which is too slow.
[sup]Those companies will squeeze every penny they can out of it and as long as not one of them changes that, none of them will need to.[/sup]

Sweden, of course. It's beautiful, and contrary to myths, it doesn't have polar bears on the streets, so don't worry about getting killed! :D But seriously, if you move to Stockholm for example, you'll find it very beautiful, pretty calm, and the people are nice. Although we're a bit drawn back than other Europeans. The only problem is that the winters are horrible sometimes, and we get new seasons of TV shows late. D:

Other than that, I was in Vienna, and it's a truly magnificent city. I loved it, and wish I could be there longer on vacation. So that's a definite recommendation.
