I've heard some praise for the good old PC FPS's. And I'm currently unexperienced with those kind of games, instead I grew up with a PS2 and games that are now the equivalent of shit. But what FPS's would you say rule the PC? I've heard some good things about Deus Ex and System Shock 2.

And I tried searching, and for some reason it went shit.

I think Counter-Strike is very popular for PC, and good.
I've actually tried CS, and no offense to the fans, but I thought it was shit. Seems heavily overrated.

Deus Ex is a very good game, and so is System Shock 2.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and S.T.A.l.K.E.R.: Clear Sky are great as well if you get them patched up.

I used to play a lot of F.E.A.R. and Half-Life 2 back when they were new.

I play ArmA: Combat Operations quite a bit now.

Half-Life. Call of Duty (the entire series, minus World At War). System Shock 2. Deus Ex. Duke Nukem 3D. F.E.A.R.. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky. Doom (the entire series). Prey. Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30.

Those are most of the older ones that I can think of that are worth a mention. I could list a bunch more, and a ton more if you included new stuff, but those are all big ones that I can think of right now.

Definitely Half-Life; you can't really go wrong with that.
The Doom series, except possibly not Doom 3.
STALKER is good, provided you can actually get it to run.
Deus Ex is supposed to be very good (I've not played it) but it seems more RPG than FPS.

And last but definitely not least: the Quake series. Especially Quake II. Brilliant games.

Most of the best have already been mentioned.
So, Portal. That game is still the most fun 6 hours I have ever had on a PC.

My fave is ARMA.

Also try Crysis. Its not all about the graphics, I run it on medium and its still great gameplay.

Portal is a puzzle game rather than an FPS.

Clive Barker's Undying is one of the best first person shooters.

Any battlefield game
Crysis until the aliens come, you can stop there.
CS/CS:S
Half-life/2 (Also there are some fantastic singleplayer and multiplayer mods out there)
Sourceforts is great fun if you get HL2
Deus Ex is ok, I didn't find it brilliant but a lot of people enjoy it
System Shock
Quake
UT
TF2

And of course some old FPS games such as Doom, so you can see where the genre has come from.

I doubt that giving the guy games that have been specifically designed with consoles in mind will work (CoD etc) as he is asking for games that shine on the PC.

Portal is a puzzle game rather than an FPS.
A puzzle game, in first person. Where you play a character who uses a portal gun to shoot your way through the puzzles.
So, it is a First Person puzzle Shooter... FPS.

Team Fortress 2, you can't beat a game with a sandvich, a jar of piss, and a bonesaw being selectable weapons.
