I'm going to agree with those citing Havok, and bring up my favorite use of it: Age of Empires III. Watching enemy infantry go flying when hit by half a dozen cannonballs really enhances the realism of the game over others in the genre. Plus, it's fun to watch.

Well, in Portal, there is not much physics stuff happening...

For now, i second Crysis and Half Life 2, but i seriously hope that Alone in the Dark will bring the "next generation" of Physics in a Game. The first Gameplay Video showed it off well, and it looks amazing.

source engine uses a heavily modifies version of havok. and those who are saying portal does not have the best physics I DISAGREE. why? ............... umm because it follows layman's terms?

I'm going to interpret this slightly different...

Yes Portal is the most ACCURATE physics, BEST I would say the original X-Com. For it's age, X-Com factored in gravity vs strength of a throw, one of the first games to incorporate the idea that a missed shot could hit someone or something else instead of just not doing anything, and above all else, the destructable terrain.

Hi, My name is Billy Wilson. I have a hand-grenade. If I pull the pin and toss the grenade against this house's wall, it will blow out a section of the wall and I can shortcut through.

Hello, I'm Corporal Flynn Taggart
(Cookie for he who can Identify). I have this giant-assed mutha-fukin rocket launcher. If I point it at this flimsy locked wooden door and pull the trigger, it does jack squat, and I have to punch in a no-clipping code to get through.
Humour ensues when I use several rounds of the Heavy Launcher to disintegrate the entire ground floor of a building, and the rest of the structure remains hovering in air. :D

The CRYEngine 2 has extremely advanced freeware.
Half Life 2 is outdated, there are many games with decent physics out there. However, it's still a top contender which really shows the life and advances of the Havok/Source engine.
Many of you may not have heard of Warmonger: Operation Downtown Destruction, a physics-based FPS using the AGEIA Physics Engine. Go look it up - it's free and a great way to waste a few hours.

Another vote for Crysis.

For me it was the engine as a whole that made Crysis, not the graphics. Push slowly through the undergrowth, and branches bend back, leaves rustle. Hell, the bigger leaves actually show decals. You can see / hear bad guys making their way through the jungle using environmental signs. The first time I 'twitch shot' at a shaking bush only to have it shoot back - pure genius.

Getting chased by the wall hacking helicopter, I noticed that when it passed low to the ground, it kicked up a load of debris. "That's pretty cool," I said to myself as I dived full length into a shrubbery. Then I realise, as the chopper circles round my location, that the downdraft is actually making the foliage shake and move. One of the most brilliantly immersive moments I've had in gaming. The helicopter then proceeded to shoot down a 3 foot thick palm tree that I was hiding behind, the trunk of which actually fell on me, with nearly fatal consequences.

I later managed to be inside a small shack when a nade went off, prompting the collapse of one side of the building, the other half teetering on the edge. I survived the nade thanks to my suit, but was actually trapped under the debris, with a squad of NKA circling outside. Even strength mode couldn't extricate me, in the end I had to blow the shit out of the entire shack to get free, leaving myself dangerously weakened.

Plenty of other physics based awesomeness in Crysis as well.

An honourable mention for COD4 as well. In general the physiscs are pretty basic, but the bullet penetration thing is amazing, particularly for online play.

From what I've played, I'd say Portal, but Crysis' physics are quite impressive, to say the least, from what I've seen. When I have a computer that can actually play it, I'll check back with y'all then.

First of all what do you consider good physics? You mean realistic physics = good physics? Personally I prefer Q3 physics which are far from realistic but features strafejumping, aircontrol, overbounce, rocketjumps, wallstrafing, etc.

I played ETQW beta and just like all these new games the uber realistic physics dont add to the gameplay, if anything they distract from it. I'm used to having a great deal of control over the avatars I play in games (mostly Q3, SC and ET). Simple physics mean a smaller amount of variables which in turn give greater control and less lotto. When driving the ETQW vehicles there was just no consistency. Taking the same path twice would never result in the same result as even the smallest rock could have a huge impact on where you are heading.

Good physics =/= realistic physics. I dont play much singleplayer games, but I guess Oblivion was one of the first games I played where the physics actually added to the gameplay, using arrows to get those precious stones you couldnt reach at low levels :p Still ... I was just longing for those Q3 strafes when I was exploring Oblivion :)

I can image fungamers usually dont have the patience nor the skills the enjoy Q3 physics. I'm also pretty sure that most casual gamers only care about gfx, just like popular movies are mostly 90% gfx and 10% actual story but true gamers should see the beauty of simple gameplay friendly physics over these reallife physics.

I think most companies these days are focusing to much on gfx/realistic games and are totally forgetting they are programming virtual worlds which should be fun, not realistic.

Despite all the hype surrounding Aegiea PhysX, I've been seriously underwhelmed by what I've seen so far. Havok pretty much kicks its ass with a fraction of the hardware muscle needed.

I don't know what game truly has the best theoretical physics framework, but the best application of physics in a game that I've seen are Valve's Havok games. Still, they're far from perfect. Those sequences where the bridges are destroyed, for example... the metal parts just kind of crumple and fall apart, rather than twisting, stretching, or cracking the way steel might. Havok has great collision physics, but it doesn't model material properties all that well. I think that is the next big step we will see in games.

Crysis isn't bad but I haven't seen that much of it yet.

The Source Engine's physics may be 'outdated' to some, but that seems to be more to do with the actual engine's age than performance. Personally, I'm yet to find a game with better physics than Half Life 2. It sticks in my mind as the first game that actually used it's physics as a vital gameplay element, rather than a graphical masterstroke, and although the "balancing see-saw" puzzles have now been done to death, it's hard to think of another physics-enabled game that ever made as much effort to drastically alter the gameplay.
Admittedly, I've never played Crysis, and that seems to be getting a lot of love, but I recently bought a 360 and I'm damned if I'm dishing out money to upgrade my now-antiquated PC just to play one FPS.

Why, Dead or Alive's breast physics, of course. *ducks flying objects*

In all seriousness, I loved Portal's physics engine. I'd nominate Half-Life's physics engine too, but I'm a little biased against it because I'm getting a little sick of doing that seesaw puzzle every two minutes.
THEY'RE THE SAME ONE.

All replys are hereby BANNED from nominating "Portal's physics". REFER TO IT AS THE SOURCE ENGINE.
Sorry, but are we talking about "best physics ENGINE" or "best USE OF physics" in games?

Regretably I haven't played half-life, I (console-player) was scorned when the dreamcast game was cancelled. The most fun I've ever had with physics in a game though is...

HALO COMBAT EVOLVED

Once I got the mod that let me jump 100ft w/ unlimited Rockets I was in heaven. This was years and years ago. To me, great physics means you can blast something so high up you can barely see it, then watch it land right in front of you.

If you people really want to see a game with an amazing physics engine, then check out the upcoming Star Wars game "The Force Unleashed." It uses Havox along with others like DMM and Euphoria which makes it beyond most things we'll see for a while.

Just take a look at these videos and see for yourself:

we are talking about realistic physics here not force driven physics .
and i bet that u cant pull the ship down as its shown in the trailer.

Has no one made the joke about the gravity-defying breasts in Trespasser: the first game to properly use physics?
