As a matter of fact, these are merely samples. The games that I just posted are plethoras of fantastic, immersive, and just plain awesome music.

Otogi: Myth Of Demons also has some outstanding background music. Being a game based on Japanese mythology, the soundtrack is made up of traditional Japanese instruments, combined with weird, avant-garde noises. Again, when combined with the visuals and the story, it creates a game with a huge sense of atmosphere.

I know Daystar will hate me for this, but I personally think the Otogi series is a far superior take on Japanese mythology than Okami. The art direction is stronger, the visuals more dreamlike, and the soundtrack just exquisitely ethereal. And it's a hack-and-slash game featuring fully destructible environments. How can Okami compare?

I agree with everything you said there. I absolutely loved the original and sadly didn't have a chance to play the second one...I'll find it eventually of course. I can't really top that so I'll just mention another BGM I'm fond of which would be Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears from the Castlevania series

The Guardian boss fight music from Darksiders 2 is pretty great.

It just perfectly sets the mood for a large scale fight.

Screw all of you and your fancy music!

This music rules over all!

While the music I have the greatest appreciation for is classical orchestra, I've recently been listening to a lot of midi music, Megaman 1-6 mostly. I discovered this song recently and instantly fell in love with it, it's amazing what people can do with severe limitations when creating music.

we've come a long way haven't we

All of these songs are so amazing. I could easily listen to them outside of the game as well as inside of it. So did I win the thread?

I guess I'll put a little bit of everything.

From the polish dark fantasy we have the Witcher:
Awesome right?

From the weird Japanese fighting games we have this:

From the canadian company up north we have mass effect 3:

From the emotional indie scene we have to the moon:

From the even weirder japanese game we have this:
Don't judge me

EDIT: How could I have forgotten Bastion?

I worry I may have overused the piano.

You beat me to posting those two songs. Nothing can top Shadow of the Colossus in terms of an epic, soaring soundtrack, except for possibly the entire Journey soundtrack.

Also I'd have to include my personal favorite Bastion song:

I'm just gonna leave this one here. Say what you will about the game itself, the music is sublime.

Just like their games, what they lack in depth they make up for with replayability. In my case, coming on 2 years now, both playing and listening.

Who cares about games? If it isn't kaijura yuuki, it isn't good BG music :)

None of you have any taste in music

This inspired me to look up the OST. The cheapest I could find was 44 dollars. Damn.

Never fails to bring the chills.

It's also sent me off to sleep on several occasions. I just adore this piece.

Picking a "best" is impossible when there is so much fantastic VGM out there, but here's one I listened to today that I feel is just superb. Listened to the whole Twilight Princess soundtrack while studying and this is at least *one* of the best songs, I feel:
And another couple of great ones I just thought of:

I only ever played We <3 Katamari, but if the soundtrack of Katamari Damacy is even half as good as that one, then it must be fantabulous :D As far as I know, Katamari Damacy was never released in the PAL region, but I have heard the second song you posted, the main theme.

Here are a selection from W<3K if you haven't played it before :D They're all great songs, so it's hard to "sum up the game" with just a few.
--Opening video - just marvellous :D--
--Title screen--
--Talking to The King of All Cosmos before a mission--
