I'm going to save up for the next three years to go on a trip to somewhere in America. However I have no idea which state to go to? Any fellow escapists who recommend where to go?

EDIT: I quite like the scenery of America, but Im not too shy of going to cities either.

That's a difficult question. It really depends on what part of America you want to see. The southwest is a beautiful area, but you probably don't want to come here during the summer.

I'd recommend Colorado, Wyoming, or northern California if you're into scenery. Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to party, there's always Miami.

Find some friends in America and go on a road trip or something. That way you can see more than just one state.

Well, you have to be more specific. What do you like? Are you an outdoors type of person? If so, visit the national parks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Parks_of_the_United_States

Or do you like cities? If so...*sigh*...visit New York....but really, venture out and try new cities. I like Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Charlotte, North Carolina, Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon.

It totally depends on what you're into. America is effing huge, so you definitely have to either go in with a lot of time or a plan - preferably both.

I'm a huge fan of Maine, Seattle, and Las Vegas, but that's just my personal taste.

Well if you're interested in the varied climates of America you can just go to Washington state, it's got everything from glaciers to rainforests to desert to beaches. If your interested in actual sight seeing... you're going to need a good bit of time, a plan, and some American friends to road trip with.

Oh man, that made my day. Glad I was hipster enough to mention Portland for that magical clip. Excuse me while I go retire early. <3

I'd recommend the non tourist parts of New York City barring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I am biased on this since I'm from NYC but most people who visit that don't have family or friends there just go to the tourist attractions, most of which are lame. I'd recommend places like Union Square where people in the city go, rather than places like Times Square which are just packed with tourists. If you do end up going to NYC I'd also suggest taking the train to at least some places rather then grabbing a cab everywhere. Gives you a nice feeling of the city, and all of the misconceptions are basically untrue. The subway system is not as unclean as people think, you WON'T actually get murdered by stepping into the subway, and it's also really convenient and fairly cheap.

I would go for (assuming i didn't go to Canada for scenery) something like Washington State or Colorado. Or the redwoods in California. You must see the Rockies though. It should be a requirement for all visiting North America.

I've never been, but I also understand the Grand Canyon is absolutely beautiful! There is always Niagara Falls which to people in my area is a non-issue, but to someone who has never seen it before, WOW is it ever impressive. I would recommend though, taking a few minute to cross the border for that one, unfortunately for the states, we have the more impressive part of the falls. Sorry U.S.A.

Check out this site should help.

http://www.scenicplaces.com/

It also depends on what you want to see that is why I suggest that website. The thing you have to keep in mind is that in the continental US you have over 3,000 miles to work with and heck Alaska and Hawaii are beautiful as well.

But you have some amazing scenic spots in the North East, then you have the mountains in the middle of the country, the Grand Canyon, a bunch of beautiful parks, then there is always driving from Los Angeles up to San Fransico on the Pacific Coast Highway (you may have realistically seen clips of this drive in many movies and never realized it). But your talking 1,000's of miles apart between the different areas I mentioned.

Take a look at the site I gave, look at each state, and figure out what looks the best to you, how much time you have, and how much airport hopping or driving you want to do.

Colorado can't be beat for amazing scenery plus the towns and cities are nice. The best bbq is in Kansas City, Missouri, so if you are looking for a food destination, that is where I would go. But without knowing what you want to do, it is hard to give good advice.

Fucking Austin, Texas. We have some beautiful hills and rivers, three "lakes", the population is laid back (probably because they're all stoned), and we have some of the best live music in the world, especially if you come during ACL [http://www.aclfestival.com/] in September. We have tons of great restaurants everywhere and some of the best Tex-Mex, which everyone has to eat sometime, and an hour or so away is Salt Lick, the best fucking barbecue in the world. And if you're planning on travelling at all, we have South Padre island on the coast and the mountain ranges off to the west. It's also nothing like stereotypical Texas.

Otherwise, New York.

That depends. Are you more of a city person or a country/outdoorsy type?

Typically the majority of people who come from Europe venture to the big two: Los Angeles and New York City. I cannot personally vouch for how much fun an individual will have in either, but I can speak from experience that LA is a fun city. Just MAKE SURE you have the money to visit. I wouldn't recommend anyplace like Las Vegas (overrated, not worth the expenses to travel there), Phoenix (dirty, crime ridden city), or any other location besides LA in Southern California.

If on the other hand you are more of an outdoorsy type...I can recommend the following places: Oregon, Washington State, Northern California, Colorado, North Carolina, Vermont, and Southern Florida. Texas is even a fascinating state. Don't listen to all the rambling bullshit you hear others say about the South. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, they are just nitpicky political arguments. If you do go to Texas check out San Antonio or Houston. They are two of the most sprawling, beautiful cities to visit.

I'm from there too. We also have tons of cool rocks if OP is into geode hunting. Very mineralistic state!
