We have Tim Burton's 2005 version of Chocolate Factory to thank for coming up with yet another annoying little brat that is clearly a sociopath because he plays videogames.

the creators ignored 5 and went back to 4 and talked about that one. It seems that Yahtzee isn't the only one that prefers that one.
They're not the only ones. You show me one person who likes RE5 more than RE4, and I'll show you someone who just got slugged in the gut--by me--for being so profoundly stupid. And don't even say "But, Goose, it's just an opinion and everyone's entitled to one," because NO. NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO THAT OPINION!

OT: I can't think of a single good portrayal. Never once seen one. I can think of some pretty horrific ones, though.

(Sorry, the one on YouTube was blocked on copyright grounds.) And I actually enjoyed Law & Order until... well... my two favorite characters just... left.

I think House's portrayal of video games are reasonably good. House himself plays video games every now and then, sometimes with employees, sometimes the employees played them amongst themselves. Including the virtual reality video game that exists with in the House universe.

And they even made a Pokemon reference!

Then again, I'd consider anything above demonizing video games to be reasonably good.
I am speechless (in a good way), I was expecting him to say "it's from Pokemon" so the audience would chuckle a bit. But they took the intelligent route and didn't explain the joke. For the flaws that House has, I give credit to the writers.

If you like anime, go check out Sword Art Online. It's actually written by a guy that plays and loves MMOs. There's also Accel World to watch after SAO if you enjoyed that. Or even better than the anime, go read the novels. Whenever something happened and I wonder about the game mechanics behind it, the author was never far behind in explaining the situation. The anime is really more for the eye candy and is better to watch after reading the novels as it doesn't really explain much of what's going on.

I really think that there's no better representation of games than something written by a gamer out of love. Not something by some Hollywood writer that's been told to write about games next episode because that's what's popular.
If you wanted to watch an anime about videogames maybe, but as a stand-alone story SAO is one of the worst things ever written. Gary-Stu protagonist and awful antagonists.

WRECK-IT RALPH! Thank you and goodnight!

Ok, I have other examples, but in all seriousness, that should have been the first thing on everyone's minds.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is probably a good example. And though I haven't seen it, I heard in a review for the game that Timesplitters is being played in the film, Shaun of the Dead. Did they get that right?

Also, there's been this new series of DC Nation shorts about some girl who gets sucked into the videogame realm, and they've gotten it pretty well so far.

I watch SAO for the setting, that is, SAO itself and the other game worlds in the series. It's more or less an idealised idea of an MMO that I can't help but wish was real. The story may not be perfect but I always just considered it a means by which the author gave you a tour through the various worlds he created.

I honestly prefer the novels anyway. Only the ending falls short in the novels because everything else is explained by a game mechanic which the anime never really gets into for pacing's sake.

I see two other mentions of Big Bang Theory, is that right? Seriously? There's more mention of Community than BBT for accurate portrayals of video games? Sad.

Anyway, that's where I'm tossing my hat. The aforementioned episode where Sheldon emulates Super Mario 64 was good, (although, he does go on about his mother including the memory card, which is wrong. On the N64, they were controller packs, and you didn't need one to save in Mario 64).

There was also an episode where a hacker gets into Sheldon's World of Warcraft account and takes all of his stuff. He says that the guy stole his 'Battle Ostrich,' (which I'm pretty sure would be a Hawkstrider), that he was wearing a simple leather saddle, (after Howard sees that someone was selling a jewel-encrusted ostrich saddle online), and that his name was Glen (and you can't name your mounts. In-game, anyway, I suppose he could have given it a personality), but aside from that, the episode was more or less accurate. They got the item references, (Ruthless Gladiator armour, Wand of Untainted Power), right, which was good to hear.

There's also at least one episode where they play Halo 3, Wii Bowling, Rockband (actually, based on the drum set, it might be Guitar Hero. I suppose maybe they play both), and DDR and they make references to SWTOR, AoC, Zork and a few other games quite often. And quite casually.

If there's fault in the portrayal, it's that the guys are socially awkward, comic-obsessed "nerds," which makes you think that that's the only type of person who would play games, but the portrayal of the games themselves is fairly accurate, so I guess I can let it slide.

I don't think it's been mentioned, and I know it's a bit obvious, but the Scott Pilgrim novels have some pretty well placed references and Easter Eggs for the hardcore gamer crowd. I feel it was portrayed pretty well without feeling like pandering.

Ninja-edit: it's been mentioned, but I'm here to assure you that I at least love the graphic novels.

Ugh i remember an episode of the view where one of the guests said that "gamers" dont play stuff like Call of duty as much as they play pokemon. or something along those lines, i thought it was soo true in a show that literally has never understood the medium. Shit i need to find a video...
