I dont like JRPG or medival RPGs so it has to be the fallout series and the mass effect games are allright, but if you could say that Diablo II was an RPG then i guess thats on of mine 1# RPGs

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

At first I preferred Oblivion, but Morrowind has really grown on me. I always keep coming back to it and every playthrough is different. It'll take a long time before I ever tire of it.

Planescape Torment for sure. Amazing writing tons of choices and some of the most memorable characters ever.

Arcanum comes in there too, as it was just plain fun.

Skies of arcadia was good. Though I didn't have the stamina to finish it. I think Morrowind was the best.

Morrowind.

I can't understand why people like Oblivion. Next to Morrowind, it's a turd. A shiny, high poly turd.

Vampire Bloodlines: The Masquerade.

Seriously. It has a lot of bugs, but the mood and the setting are just great, and most quests are imaginative and fun. There's also nothing quite like lurking in the shadows, trying to find one person that seperates from the pack, casually follow him into a dark alley, and then drain em dry.
Then losing that last point in humanity and going into a frenzy every ten or so minutes.
It's still worth it though. You're not an actual vampire until you drained someone to death.

Baldur's Gate II. Great cast, great story, great voice acting, competent mechanics, plenty of variety.

Kingdom Hearts hands down.

It's honestly the only RPG I've ever played more than twice.

As for RPG mechanics, real time combat, better magic systems and incorperation of more things to do than just mash X until everything in front of you falls over.
*sigh* when will i stop being Ninja'd on this site.

I cannot possibly answer this question. I believe more than the standard "choose your attack" RPG's count as RPG's, like Legend of Zelda, Red Dead Redemption, etc. Basically anything that draws you in to a character, with an involving and thorough story, and allows you to progress with experience, be it in point form or via new weaponry, is a role-playing game, in the purest sense of the word.

(Bare in mind, I'm not looking for a debate with this, my mind is made up from countless discussions on the subject. Feel free to counter it if you wish, just do not expect rebuttal from me.)

Top runners would be;

Anything by BlackIsle/Bioware
Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Terranigma
Any Super Mario RPG
Legend of Zelda series
GTA Series
Red Dead Redemption
Fable series
Deus Ex
Secret of Mana
7th Saga
Chrono Trigger & Cross

But if you put a gun to my head and made me blurt one out, it'd probably be Fallout.

What is the best RPG/JRPG you ever played? Why?

Also, are there any game mechanics in certain RPG's you wish would be in more?
Vagrant Story.

Why? Story, characters, dialogue, atmosphere, music, replayability, challenge...

It's one of the most emotionally/ philosophically mature games I know. This game needs a remake AND a sequel.

I would pick this game over Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2 and Oblivion any day....IMO custom made characters (empty vessels for one's Ego) don't have that "magic" a real character has.
