Honestly, "Best RPG" isn't specific enough for me because, like any "best" comparison, I'd have to know, best in what way.

Dragon Age is probably the best single-player, linear, story-driven RPG I've ever played.
City Of Heroes is probably the best massively multiplayer, non-linear, open story RPG I've ever played.

I've a lot of favorites - I don't think I could chose a single BEST one. Some valid contenders for the spot of best include The World Ends With You; Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles; Jade Empire; Persona 4; and Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.

Each has it's high and low points, but I'm inclined to vote Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles to the top. The entire theme regarding memories still gets to me, having so many memories tied up in playing the game with friends, arguing over what the best character class was, and trying to convince people that the soundtrack is utterly amazing.

I really enjoyed Brave Fencer Mushashi.
THIS TOO! Good God I loved that game! And I seemed to have forgotten about Disgaea 2.

So... yeah. Not one single "best" RPG, but many damn good ones. :D

Both Golden Sun games are tied with Chrono Trigger. The trifecta of RPG awesomeness.

Final Fantasy IX and Persona 3 FES Great stories, decent combat systems, and great characters. Everything you could need.

Probably goes without saying but I've beaten Final Fantasy 6 and Earthbound more times then I can remember. Final Fantasy 6 I always seem to fight a new random encounter that I never did the last time I played.

Planescape: Torment

Why? Because of the setting, the story and the system.
And the characters range from hilarious to scary to lovely.

Since I'm not part of the hyper-intellectual RPG crowd I'll just list some that were interesting to me because of their lack of RPG conventions:
Paper Mario and Borderlands.

Baldur's Gate Trilogy
Planescape Torment
Fallout 1, 2

.....and SUPER MARIO RPG, Legend of the 7 Stars.

That game can still make me laugh.

As an aside, really, anything made in the last 5 years? Not anywhere near up to snuff. And that's not nostalgia talking. Damn you, Bethesda....

Planescape Torment, best rpg EVAR!

Powerful, philosophical story, deep supporting characters(dakkon is a god, one scene with morte made me cry), expert voice acting, a dynamic storyline, combat is enjoyable but doesn't bog down progressing through the story. Adding the ability to run to the infinity engine means you can avoid almost any fight you don't want to participate in. Alignment matters, and the most important stat in the game is wisdom, not strength, because conversations move the plot forward more than hammer swinging.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Just so well designed and amazingly well written, it really is a masterpiece.

Fable:The Lost Chapters. Fable 2 sucked compared to the original.
I rarely beat RPG's. So that is really sayin' something for me.
P.S. I beat both Kingdom Hearts and loved them, but Fable was my fave. And I count Pokemon as its own genre, because its POKEMON.

I'm going out on a limb here with posting: (a) a sci-fi for once (b) the greatest PC game of all time.

I would also agree with the guy who said Pokemon as a close second.

I would say mass effect1,2 or borderlands, but I don't really consider them rpgs, I might also say pokemon, but thats a bit unfair. SO it comes down to well, Paper mario and the thousand year door, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GAME, played it twice, it owned. I wish they would make another paper mario RPG (I played the platformer, it just wasn't as good as the previous two, and was not an RPG)

I'd have to say Fallout 3. It's the only one I keep coming back to. As a matter of fact, I just finished another run-through a few hours ago.
Fallout: New Vegas will probably be even better.
