Best Sci-Fi

I hate space stuff because they use lasers and crap. Still, Starship Troopers is awesome. I also like Star Wars because the storm troopers, clone troopers and Mandalorian bounty hunters look awesome.

What in your opinion is the best Sci-Fi and why.

Best Sci-Fi *what*? There's so many options that it's not possible to make a single comparison that encompasses all of them in the same continuum.

My favorite Author is Robert A. Heinlein, although my favorite single novel is probably Snow Crash.
Favorite TV show? Fringe.
Favorite Movie? Probably The Matrix.
I won't include games because as far as I'm concerned there isn't a game good enough to be included in this company. (I haven't played every game out there, of course, so I could be wrong.) So what does that leave? Comics? Probably Schlock Mercenary.

I like all of them for such different reasons, though, that it doesn't really add up to anything. I like Heinlein because he has such a benevolent and idea-centric view of the future and humanity. Fringe is just a damn good drama. The Matrix ushered in an entirely new approach to special effects and has kind of a nifty plot. And Schlock Mercenary is just fun.

seeing as the vast majority of the Sci-Fi I know is books.......I would say that my favorite sci-fi things come in this order
1. the battle tech universe (before FASA went under and whizkids butchered it with dark ages)
2. Star gate
3. Alastair Reynold's revelation space trilogy
4. Star trek

Enders Game is one of my favorites. One of the few books that I have read in one day.

I enjoyed The Forever War. It's a book that uses the theory of relativity to help show a soldier's departure from civilian life. It was mostly about Vietnam but can be linked to most any war.

Starship Troopers. Both the movies and the books. The three movies because they are just so bad and have little to do with the book (except sorta the end of the third movie). The book because it showed me how recycled most sci-fi ideas are.

I haven't seen the second or third starship troopers but I thought it was funny that the entire first movie is like a sentence or two in the book (you can't really count the boot camp because the boot camp in the book was bad ass and brutal and the boot camp in the movie was for whimps)

I'm surprised that there isn't any "BattleStar Gallactica" love to be found here. I'm passionate about this series for one simple reason: accesibility. You don't have to be an uber leet sci-fi nerd to enjoy this gem. It's a wonderful melange of space opera, shakesperian melodrama, and sunday matinee escapism. I would feel no shame showing BSG to a non sci-fi fan, because it less about space, and all its connotations, and more about people in a tough situation just trying to survive.

Theyre just amazing with an excelant cast and storys but now that theyre both over im looking for something else to watch.

Hitchhiker's Guide is definitely up there if I just want something easy and entertaining to read.

Although my current favourite sci-fi is Iain M. Banks' Culture series. I just really like the fact that, unlike a lot of SF writers, even though his stories are all about fantastically powerful galactic-scale technology, it always boils down to the characters. And his characters are brilliant, especially Zakalwe from Use of Weapons. The final twist in that book was just... suffice it to say I had to put the book down for a few seconds.

Dune is pretty cool, including the movie by David Lynch.
But like Star Wars, it's not really sci-fi, it's more like "mysthicism-fantasy in space".

So I'll say Aliens.

Firefly without a doubt. And Dollhouse is bloody awesome thankyou kindly! I will justify this at some point but i literally need to be out of the door in 3 minutes so i will use the age old argument of...So ner!!

Also battlestar was fantastic, stargate atlantis is a lot better than it has any right to be and doctor who used to be good but russell t davies couldnt write his own name and stephen moffat should have run things YEARS ago.

In TV series: Star Trek - the Next Generation. Picard will forever be my hero. If I ever think of a captain of a starship, I'll think of Picard.

In books: Dune. The dynamics, the characters, the long term plot. It was all beautiful. And it's one of the only Sci-Fi books I've read.

Either gotta be Star Trek OS... or Dune. Both classic and highly influential.

As for games...

I'd say Mass Effect truly hit the Sci-Fi bone for me.... I loved exploring worlds... meeting new alien species.. using futuristic technology & weapons... it was pure Sci-Fi adventure for me.

Probably one of the best kick ass things americans made. There was this short anime show that totally screamed TWILIGHT ZONE at the end!!!

No doubt Twilight Zone. It was way ahead of it's time and had quite some controversial content. It was very socially liberal.
