But there were too few of those! In trying to be all philosophical it missed valuable bang-bang time! I seriously want someone to make a full CGI film which just shows off all sorts of awesome gory fights and destruction from start to finish with no plot.
That would get dull pretty quickly. The only premise that sort of thing works in is video games, as the fact that you're controlling the action means a different experience each time, and you tend not to get bored as easily. A film that's just constant fighting would get really dull pretty damn quick.
First off a honorable mention to FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN. You may say what you like about the movie (i consider it "decent", but fairly wooden not only thanks to the slightly uncanny digital actors), but every 10 seconds or so there will be an image or shot on screen that is just mindblowingly beautiful in a very sci-fi way
Yes, it is a wallpaper but it really looks like this in the movie
Another image that immediately comes to mind is the sweeping shots of Los Angeles in BLADE RUNNER. Although it might be heavily inspired by Metropolis itself, this is the true iconic image that defined the look of Science Fiction to this very day. And i don't even like this movie THAT much
Although this one is pretty awesome too
Another image that i personally found to be mindblowing in it's own right is from CHILDREN OF MEN when...
the Soldiers in the end see the first baby for a very long time and the Battle just stops while the protagonists carry it through this group that is utterly fascinated by the sight, trying to touch it or just stare in wonder or disbelief. I couldn't really find an image that captures all of that at the same time, but it looks kinda like this
And another two favorites from favorite Sci Fi Films, the "money shot" of the otherwise not that spectaculary shot, but still awesome movie SERENITY, as well as an image of THE FOUNTAIN, wich is in itself possibly the most beautiful looking Film of the last 10 years or so.
