No.

Just no.

Portal is good, but it's so overrated it's insane.
give me one problem with the actual game.
It's too short, the difficulty curve is way out of whack, the humour only ever gave me an odd chuckle, plus it's all set in boring white laboratory.
There we are, 4 problems! I'll admit, it doesn't do much wrong, but most of what it does do right, it doesn't do very well.

OT: Mass Effect 2 for me. I love that game to bits.

This is stupid. You cannot honestly pick a best game of all time from different genres.
You can. It will just mostly come down to preference and Portal.
You DON'T know the preferences of the TS, so what you're actually doing, is giving someone poor and unfounded advice.
He did ask for it though, so the TS is being equally stupid.

Being short is not a problem. The learning curve is perfect. The GlaDOS dialogue is genius. And pointing out the setting as a problemis funny since most FPS and TPS ar set in boring gray/brown ambients.

OT: Planescape:Torment, Deus Ex, Half-Life

Thief II: The Metal Age.

Hands-down, no competition.
This. By a lot, such an enjoyable experience. Thief: The Dark Project was also absolutely FANTASTIC!

Bioshock would be another good choice, but that game has a few mixed ratings.

First I love mass effect and its sequel okay.
1)It was only meant to be a demo that came out in the orange box to see if people liked it.
2)how so?
3)every time glados said something (pretty much) is funny. pitch black comedy. dont worry, not everyone gets it.
4)that is part of the story. perfect white interuppted by glimpses of reality.

you may be a nija BUT I BE A PIRATE! ARRRR
(not info pirate. just sayin)
Well, to Blackality, being short is a problem. When people pay for games now, they expect them to be longer than 2 hours. I can gather the whole demo whatchamacallit, but they could have at least tried to make it a bit longer.
My problem with the difficulty curve is that it was set to 'piss easy' until puzzle 19 with requires a bit more thinking, and then difficulty just jumps out the window again for the Glados fight.
I understand the comedy completely, but it just felt like an attempt of Valve going "LOOK. LOOK, SHE WANTS TO KILL YOU. DO YOU GET IT? NO? LET'S PUSH THAT JOKE DOWN YOUR THROAT FIVE MORE TIMES THEN"
And while the setting was a nice change, at least most of the brown/grey FPS/TPS games have different locales. Houses, forests, underground bunkers, etc etc. Portal is just white room after white room after white room.

In my opinion I think the best single player PC game that I have played this year is Dragon Age: Origins. The story is good and it keeps you drawn in, the writing is excellent, the game-play is fun, and the acting is superb. It is a great game. It is one of the best RPGs I have ever played.

Portal gets a place somewhere high up there, as do quite a few other games. Top place, though? Planescape: Torment. No doubt about it.
Planescape: Torment is awesome, but I'll say the best one is Mass Effect (it doesn't matter it's also on the Xbox, right?), which barely wins Planescape for me.

Best single player game in terms of enjoyment: Little Big Adventure 2 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Big_Adventure_2]. I've completed this game so many times it's not even funny anymore. The story is fun, lighthearted and quirky. The gameplay is a solid mix of action, adventure, platforming and (some) RPG. I loved it to death as a kid, and I still love it today.

Best single player game in terms of quality: Mass Effect 2.

At first it wasnt "a demo whatchamacallit" it was a demo. A long demo at that. about the diffuculty curve, I found most challanging enough for me to use my brain but not stupid like silent hill 2's (il ove that game also BTW)
and you really did miss half the comedy if thats all you thought it was.
and finally about the fucking setting. for the second time THAT.IS. THE. POINT.
Well, since we've resolved point 1, onto point 2!
Yes, I did have to think, but compared to other puzzles games, I zipped through it. The only real challenging one was 19 but even that was easy compared to other puzzle games.
And how exactly did I miss it? I remember the 'deduction to points, then death' joke, the 'you will be baked, then there will be cake' joke, and I remember the 'the cake is a lie' scribblings. If there was any other comedy in there, please tell me, because I saw none.
And while that may be the point it's fucking boring. That's what I was saying all this time.
