The Longest Journey was a landmark game for the adventure genre, taking the best of things like Broken Sword and some of the earlier Lucasarts games (before they went Star Wars crazy and stopped making creative, innovative games like the stuff Tim Schafer does and did), and then added to all that with a much more compelling and well-written storyline, realistic and likeable characters (the best case I've ever seen of well written characters, in fact, and years before Half Life 2 came along with Alyx Vance and Dr Breen...), and overall a much better feel.
Good call on TLJ, absolutely amazing game.

I cant really choose one game that is the best overall, so here is a little list, in no particular order!

Dreamfall
Mass effect
Stalker
Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines
Knights of the old republic 2 (darker story, in my opinion better characterisation)
Call of duty 4 (shame the single player in mw2 was a complete letdown)

Fallout 3 was the most popular on the Escapist on the last top 5 favourite games count.

Most Metacritic critics gave Half-Half 2 an almost perfect score.

I haven't been able to play either yet so I can't say much about them, but it seems the Orange Box is by far the most popular out of all of them. It's still selling out after all this time!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I'm not sure what it stands for but that doesn't stop it from being awesome.
Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber.
Fucking amazing games.

For me, however, it would have to be Mass Effect 2. Such a game. However, play the first game first to get the best storyline continuation.

Warcraft 3, along with its expansion.
Absolutely right. I still play it at least once every week. I love story, the community is great, there's still loads of people online and new maps are still coming out, and for good reason.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R's a close second. The creators managed to make the game realistic, without taking the fun out of it. The horror atmosphere is there, yet there are places that feel relaxed, like the Freedom base. They manage to put in a lot of humor, even though some of it is lost in the translation. The weapons feel right, and it has probably the most bearable escort mission in any game.

Thief II: The Metal Age.

Hands-down, no competition.
I agree... Well actually, does it have to be a PC exclusive. If not, then Fallout 3. Or wait Psychonauts came out for the PC didn't it... If so then that. Unless it has to be a game that I personally played on the computer in which case, yes, Theif II.

Does seem like a reasonable shout though, that game often crops up in my brain, it's very memorable. Maybe.... it's.............. art? *le gasp!*

Everyone (I think, I haven't read past the 15th or so post in) is wrong. The only correct answer to this is Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. It's an early BioWare game, and by far the single best game ever made, and that includes non-video games.
Totally this.
Only one other game beats it, and that's the entire Baldur's Gate Saga crammed together with one awesome MOD into one massive, freaking amazing game. If I had to pick one singleplayer game to play forever, it would be the Baldur's Gate Saga. Just so freaking awesome.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Or the first 2 Thief games
It took a staggering 20 replies before someone finally mentioned this game.
Shame on you kids for not knowing your gaming classics!

Portal

No.

Just no.

Portal is good, but it's so overrated it's insane.
give me one problem with the actual game.
It's a good game, but it is very overrated. By that i mean it's "one of the best games" rather than "the greatest game in existence".

The major hype and all the annoying memes ruined it for tons of people too.

I'd say either Mafia or Deus Ex- though I haven't finished Deus Ex yet. And one of these days I really gotta sink my teeth into a thief game...

You sir, have been ninja'd. Observe page 1 more closely.

Now, while Deus Ex, Halflife, Portal, Thief and System Shock are brilliant, the most revolutionary of its time, was, without a doubt, Doom.

Personally i think, that when it comes out, Crysis 2 will be the best at the moment
