omg warband is addictive! XD got the game on a friday night and by Sunday night i've logged 22 hours >.<

But i'm going with Mass Effect1+2. Only games i've EVER replayed 3 times that arent RTS!

p.s. Red Dead Redemption is a close second

Portal is a fantastic game that I loved. But you can only play it for the first time once, after that it really loses its charm through each play.

I would reccomend Knights of the Old Republic/Mass Effect/Jade Empire/Dragon Age because they're excellent RPG's and have decent replayability but they're long haul games.

I'm going to say that 'best' is hard to judge, so here's my personal criteria:

Engages the Player
Can be as Hard or Easy as you want
Can be played for any length of time and not feel like a grind
Has large amounts to do and customise
Provides both a challenge and surprise

So... I'm going to have to say Civilization.

I just don't get why everyone loves it so much.

If tribes 2 had a proper single player, that would be mine. Well probably not, but I just think it had a great energy and feel.

But I was an avid Thief player and I think it really captured the mood of this dank, steampunk pseudo-era. And it was just a really cool concept. I think that was where HL2 went wrong (and Avatar for that matter). It just got lost in gimmicks and "cute things" and annoying jokes, among other things. I think the less is more philosophy would have done wonders for HL2. But it really tried to gain a wider audience and I think it achieved its goal. I think portal performed better because it didn't give away a lot. It made you think more rather than the story being baby fed to you, but in the end it was really just a minigame (I'm going to get the axe for that one). But come on, it is. That is what its meant to be

I think James Joseph Emerald described it the best. It was a good game but (like Avatar, lol) it was not the best.

And I cant believe that no one has mentioned Daikatana! The funny thing is I played this game when I was like 7 or 8 and it seemed so cool. Then I grew up and realised how shit it really is.

I'll also throw in Lords of magic (even thought there was a lot of holes in gameplay and fairness), and... Liberation Day (again, gameplay and fairness). But thief take top trumps, both 1 and 2. I also think 3 did ok but obviously not as good

yea... Avatar was shit

Planescape: Torment
I'm pretty sure this is the correct answer, although The Longest Journey was pretty great. Also Tie Fighter. Also Ultimas 4-7. Also Bard's Tale 1-3. Also Grim Fandango (and most other Lucas Arts adventures). Also Pool of Radiance (Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc.). Also Wizardry. Also Wasteland. Also Fallout (1 & 2 especially). Also Civilization (2-4 at least; probably 5). Also Baldur's Gate (1 & 2; plus Icewind Dale)...

Thief II: The Metal Age.

Hands-down, no competition.
Hear, hear! Play the Thief games immediatly if you haven't and realize that graphics don't make a great game. It's the best series you'll ever get your fingers on.

And once you're through with them do not play any game made after 2004. Get to know the great ones:

Planescape Torment
Neverwinter Nights
Fallout 2
Undying
Deus Ex
Gabriel Knight
American McGee's Alice
Vampire Bloodlines
