Best soundtrack in a game.

I find the Guitar Hero 3 soundtrack the greatest. its full of rock, thats why i like it. what about you?

Vagrant Story. Never heard a soundtrack so atmospheric, sophisticated and original. Sakimoto is a genius.

This is just my opinion, but games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and even Grand Theft Auto should not count in this discussion. The music is not originally from the game - it's composed by someone else and from somewhere else, and is then licensed for use in the game. It's not game music, it's licensed music. I understand that the topic is "best soundtrack in a game" and not "best game music", but it's just so easy to throw together a playlist that loads of people will like.

A few of my favourites are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (although it omits a couple of classic Castlevania tracks), beatmania IIDX (all of it - hundreds of songs currently spanning 15 different versions with a 16th on the way), Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Ico, Jet Set Radio & Jet Set Radio Future, Katamari Damacy, Parappa The Rapper, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Portal, Rez, Shenmue, The Dig, Transport Tycoon, Turrican, Valkyrie Profile, World Of Warcraft, X-Com Apocalypse, and Xenogears.

While I don't care for the game, this is true. Halo did have a solid score. Of course, when you give Steve Vai a guitar and say "Play us a theme" you will always win.

True, but Steve Vai performed the Halo 2 guitar theme, which is the best one in my opinion.

That one group of gamers who played for a MS Keynote were pretty kickass too.

My favorite soundtrack, the only one I've actually decided to buy, is the Chrono Cross soundtrack. Woooo.. I like it. When I was younger I did have a cassette tape filled with FF7 and FF8 midis. xD

As far as original soundtracks go, I loved the chilling ambient music in Mass Effect - the main screen music got me every time.

In games in general, not necessarily original music but in my opinion the best music, was GTA3, MSX FM. DnB from Moonshine records, with the addition of an MC to yell atop a master-mix of heaven. That was some good shite.
