I apologize if this has been done before...

Since it's 2010 and the first decade of the current millennium has come and gone, I thought it would be somewhat interesting to see what everyone thought was the best television show of the past decade. I'll go ahead and go first.

Best Show of the Decade:
The West Wing (1999-2006); Yes, I know that this show started before the decade officially started, but it came into its prime after the turn of the century. It had a novel idea that no one had ever tried before, showing the country a fictional Presidential Administration and acquainting us with the biggest figures in the West Wing. It had incredible performances from Martin Sheen, John Spencer, Alan Alda, Jimmy Smits, Bradley Whitford, Rob Lowe, and the rest of the star-studded cast. It had deep and likeable characters from the quirky and idealistic Sam Seaborn(Lowe) to the genuine and caring Republican Senator Arnold Vinick (Alda) to the nerdy, intelligent, and compassionate President Bartlet (Sheen). The dialogue was superb and the storylines were top notch (most of the time). But, what really made this show click was the chemistry between the main characters and how utterly believable they were. I still watch my DVD set of the show all the time.

Honorable Mention:
Damages (2007-present); Another show that greatly benefits from incredible star power and great performances from the main characters. Non-linear story telling make this show compelling but hard to follow, and yet it works so damn well.

Technically the decade isn't over.

Just saying!

Best show of the decade: The first season of House.

The rest kinda sucked.

I will say Top Gear, because it is informing and quite funny.

Hmmm...
Technically Family Guy was started in 1999, but it ran for a few years, then got cancelled, then started again in 2005.

I don't really know, I've never been big on TV. I loved Firefly but that only barely counts.

You know what? My vote goes to Dead Like Me. Quirky humour and entertaining death scenes galore!

Futurama is the only show that I was interested in since the start.
So I choose that.

LOST!!!!! Family guy too. Oh, and House.
I agree with Lost. I am absolutely sure that Lost is a television series people will regard in the future as well and probably I well show it to my children if this is remotely their field of interest.

Same goes for House M.D. Especially the "mind fuck" episodes which play with the viewer's expectations and viewing habit.
Yet this applies :

At the risk of getting flamed and demonstrating my ignorance on most live-action TV, Avatar the Last Airbender. It was the show that really caught my interest, had great animation, a story far more epic than a Nick show with a fairly cliche premise has any right to, and an assortment of "holy shit this is freakin' awesome" moments.

Of course, Futurama is a very close second, losing because Avatar had a slight edge (though they're not very comparable) and it piloted in 1999.

Again I see the disturbing trend of gamers having not seen The Wire. If you had there would be no other choice.

The failure to mention THE WIRE in this thread makes it worhtless. The wire is a contender of the greatest tv show ever, there is a unversity course just on this show, it is genuinly amazing and despite being profound and having a lot of phillosophy and hard hitting facts about modern america, it is still gripping and involving police drama. Seriously, go and watch the wire, you will not regret my recomendation.

I admit to not ever watching the Wire, though I was told that would not like it by my roomate in my freshman year of college.

However, to those who contend that the decade is not over, I have to point out that, in fact, it is. Starting with 2000, 2009 was the last year of the century's first decade. Though I supppose that if one began the decade in 2001, then it is not. Hmmmm...was 1990 the first year of the 90s or the last year of the 80s?

When you count years and stuff, it always gets so confusing.

taxi, I don't know if it was released this decade. It might have been a nineties show. Damn that Latka, he cracks me up.
