I enjoyed the Legend of Dragoon combat. It was the standard turn-based combat that Final Fantasy had patiently prepared me for, but instead of just hitting X and sitting back, you could keep pressing the button to match up two squares that appeared, continuing your combo and doing some serious damage. It was just similar enough to give the classic turn-based feel, without it getting too boring.

Disgaea series.

Have over 150 hours on my #3 for PS3. Just ordered #1 and #2 on the PSP.

Have 90 hours on my DS version of #1.

Best freakin games I have played in a long time

Nethack, Final Fantasy 12, Etrian Odyssey (pretty much the same as standard FF games but difficult enough to make you think about what you're doing).
I second nethack. It's hard to get into, but you can sink hundreds of hours into that game.
Edit: Plus it's completely free.

Front Mission, Final Fantasy Tactics are my favorite. King' bounty is just ... on a simpler side of the spectrum.

Disgaea is definitely something else, only played the first game (remake) on the psp, and that was one hell of an experience.

Fire Emblem. FE9 & 10 for GC and Wii are some of my most-played console games.

What's the name of that game where you and a friend take turns punching each other's arm? That one.

Turn based gameplay covers quite a few different sorts of possibilities so I can't think of one game that is just simply the best.

Wizardry games have pretty good turn based systems and challenge levels. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is good. Blood Bowl is very good recent game based on an older table top game that let's you develop a team over time. Elven Legacy is a good Panzer General sort of game with units that level up and stay with you in a campaign.

Well, I can just support this comment. If you like tactics then Disgaea is definitely the game for you.

heroes of might and magic.

the perfect blend of RPG and strategy. just pay attention to with one you start with. i recomend 3 or 5. but mostly 3, because the green/gold dragons FANTASTIC!

but i hear 2 is the best.

X-Com: UFO Defense. Finest turn based game ever made.

HM for Jagged Alliance 2, which is also freakin' fantastic, although the difficulty curve is vicious.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Advance Wars: Dual Strike,it's amazing. It's probably my 2nd favourite game of all time,it's challenging, addictive and has tons of replayability (I'm around the 200hr mark in my game)

Heroes of Might and Magic series (especially 3) and Age of Wonders are amazing turn-based strategy games.

I have to agree with the previous fire emblem posts

I think the combination of turn based combat and permadeath to your characters was both genius and absolutly evil which often lead me to shout things like "Dammit Soren stop dying you can be useful later!!!!"
