I was thinking recently about video game plot twists for some reason and was wonder what everyone elses favorite is.

For me it is the major one form Jade Empire, Kotor, and Bioshock

Definitely the one from Knights of the Old Republic. It came as a complete shock the first time around and yet, looking back, there was enough foreshadowing for it to make sense and not just seem like it was pulled from nowhere.

I have always loved the CoD plot twists. Short, yes, but the most exiting campaigns I have ever played. MW3's was my favourite, although a certain part of it got spoiled for me before I even got the damn game, which I wasn't too happy about...

I say that Knights of the Old Republic 2's Twist was better.

The twist is.... there isn't one.

Perhaps you were expecting some surprise, for me to reveal a secret that had eluded you, something that would change your perspective of events, shatter you to your core. There is no great revelation, no great secret. There is only you.

Eh...don't know if I'd agree with that. I'd say there's a big revelation once you meet the Jedi Masters at Dantooine. What you're told there subverts Star Wars lore in such a clever way. I still get chills.

Now I'm looking forward to it again (I'm playing KotOR II...again).

I just enjoy the subversion. You are lead the whole game to believe that something groundbreaking is going to happen, and then it doesn't. The lack of a twist is itself a twist because the whole game hints at there being one.

But upon the revelation, if you went in expecting the twist, you instead receive clarity.

Imagine you went into the game for the first time again. The twist in KOTOR 1 made everything click together. You expect something along that line to do the same in the sequel. Instead, nothing happens, and yet your new perspective upon being told this makes everything click together anyways. There's no missing piece, just a certain point of view.

Persona 4 although the final plot twist of who is really behind the killings is fairly obvious I honestly didnt see much else coming in that game and even better you can actually finish the game without finding the true ending out if you dont figure out whats going on and choose the wrong responses (or use a guide).

Alice madness returns had a nice simple plot twist as well although it could be said it was more a gradual realisation as the game unfolded rather than a twist.

Also mario 2 what an ending surely the twist to end all twists and make you feel like your time was a true investment into contributing to something that actually mattered. (go complete it now if you dont know already)

Yeah, KotOR was my favourite twist until I finally played Jade Empire. I'm normally someone who sees things from miles away but I was actually surprised. Great bit of characterization, had me fooled. And the foreshadowing with people constantly bringing up my 'weakness' was very clever. Very clever.

Oh come on - if you can take one look at that guy, and not immediately go "Yup, he's the villain" you've officially not seen enough kung-fu movies. (that, and I'm still not sure what that weakness was supposed to be? Getting distracted by shiny?

Ot: Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - great foreshadowing, and it still hits you like a stab in the guts (pun most definitely intended)

I trust you are referring to
Adachi being the real culprit
And not
Izanami being the mastermind behind everything

Because that last twist really came out of nowhere and was pretty lame in my opinion. (Not to mention how disappointing the final battle was)
Other than that, I really enjoyed the story.

One of my favourite twists has to be in Silent Hill 2
When James watches the video tape in the hotel, and admits that he killed Mary.

Hey, hey, cut me some slack. He was a wise old master teaching students in a isolated village in some mountains, and played the 'I'm ethical and upright and don't believe the ends justify the means' part pretty hard. He filled a different stereotype and I fell for it, that's no worse than automatically assuming he was the villain.

And yeah, I think you're right about the weakness. At least my characters always seemed to be.

Anyone play Tales of Symphonia? I got through the first half of the game thinking that there was a pretty straightforward plot, but about 10 hours in-

BAM. Good guys are actually bad, and the bad guys are actually just pawns for the even badder guys!

Thief: The Dark Project

Wasn't really the most surprising twist, pretty much from the instant you meet your shady employer you know there's something... off about em. Still when the inevitable reveal comes I doubt many people were expecting it to be quite so damned grand.

And the style, bloody hell that game had style.

Yes! That was one of the first plot-driven games I really got into. The first time I hit that part of the story my teenage-self was floored. I used to say when I was younger how KotOR had a better plot that the prequel trilogy and still am of that opinion.

I also loved the IRL twist behind Super Mario 2, how it was actually Doki Doki Panic with different sprites.

Would you kindly turn your attention to Bioshock.

Kotor and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic also had great plot twists.

Bioshock, Persona 3 and Halo 2.

What? I'm sure a lot of people didn't see that betrayal happen!
