I completely forgot about Everblack. I will have to pick that up next with my next paycheck. I may end up picking up their debut album anyhow just for the same of being complete (minus EPs, of course).
As death metal albums go it's not bad - not really my taste but I can at least listen to it and find something to enjoy, probably because there's an undercurrent of thrash so it's not just "unrelenting br00tality raargh!". Kind of like the early Therion albums I suppose, before they transitioned to just straight up bombastic opera metal (which I fully support because it's freaking awesome).

I enjoy death metal, but I too tend to prefer melodic and, "Bombastic opera metal," as you so perefctly phrased it. The thing about Mercenary that I find particularly nice is that a great many of their songs have almost a symphonic quality to them while still remaining true to metal as well.

I almost forgot another singer I would add to my list of awesome metal vocalists. I noticed the album cover in my CD rack this morning!

Jonny Santos of Silent Civilian (Also singer for Spine shank). I have a friend who has spent quite a bit of time with Jonny and the band's guitarist, Fido.

My "top 10" changes a lot, save for the top three...currently:

1.) Rob Halford: The Metal God.

2.) Dio: FI-YAH! LOOK OUT! No further explanation needed.

3.) Bruce Dickinson: Because he's awesome, and if I didn't put him on this list, he'd challenge me to a fencing duel and kick my ass.

4.) Russell Allen: Symphony X is one amazingly talented band musically, but it's Allen's vocal capabilities that really put them over the top in my book.

5.) Matt Barlow: I was pretty damn upset when he left Iced Earth. And did I ever rejoice when he came back.

6.) Ralf Scheepers: Awesome in Gamma Ray, and even more amazing in Judas Pr-...er...Primal Fear.

7.) Robert Lowe: No, not the actor, the singer from Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass. May not have the best range in the world, but puts so much into his delivery you'd swear the man could read the phone book and make it sound like every word was critically important.

8.) Floor Jansen: I like many female metal vocalists, but Floor is the only woman on my top 10 list. Operatic capability? Check. Classic metal style? Check. Throaty blues? Check. Emotive and energetic? Check. Four-octave range? Check. Phenomenal stage presence? Check. Amazingly cool person in real life? Damn right.

9.) Geoff Tate: Yeah, okay, so Queensryche hasn't been "metal" for a while, but their early albums were incredible, and Tate's powerful vocals were a big part of that.

10.) Warrel Dane: Tortured emotive operatics? Currently on this list because I have been on a major Nevermore kick as of late and am very much looking forward to the release of The Obsidian Conspiracy.

Four Honorable Mentions: Jorn Lande, Jon Oliva, Eric Adams, King Diamond.

Clearly, Phillip Anselmo is one of the tops. As well as Rob Halford, James Hetfield, and we can't forget Randy Blythe from Lamb of God. Oh, and Howard Jones from KSE. Seriously, listen to Holy Diver cover. His range is sick and, being that Ive seen them live 3 times, he's great live too.
I'm sure if the thread was entitled "Most clichéd vocalists in metal" then those guys would be up there...

One of THE best metal vocalists, hands down, is Peter Tägtgren. If anyone doesn't know who he is, educate yourself!

What the hell is metal? It's changed so much that now bands that only have screamers as "singers" are considered metal because they're heavy. Now, I love screaming, but metal is heavy AND extremely technical, so just playing two chords over and over again in drop tuning does not make you metal. Personally, I think metal is now called "Post-hardcore" because if involves both the intricate guitar work of metal plus the heavy vocals/screaming of hardcore. The best modern band that does it is Bullet for my Valentine.

Dave all the way. I just like the way his voice can change over albums. Nothing from united abominations sounds like killing is my business.

Josh Scogin from The Chariot.
A little bit harder than classic metal, but more power and conviction in his voice than anyone I can think of.

EDIT: I was right there with you DEEK13 until the Bullet for my Valentine remark.
