Best way a video game broke the 4th wall.

Mass Effect 2's Quarian/Turian conversation was funny. Without giving it away to those of you who haven't seen it:

"Standard equipment for any responsible adult."

Metal Gear solid 2.
When the cornel (How ever you bloody spell it) tells you to turn of the game because youve played to long. I shat bricks.

Am I of a minority when I say I had to google the definition of breaking the fourth wall?

OT: Tamagotchi
i guess i am too then, though i just read the responses...

OT:as for games i dont think i have played one that applies, but as far as TV goes the grim adventures of billy and mandy did the job nicely... not that this thread is about tv though........

EDIT: OH GOD HOW COULD I FORGET ARKHAM ASYLUM. that cutscene freaked me the fuck out, seeing as how the month before i had gotten red rings when i decided to ignore literally the EXACT SAME THING

The monkey island series seemed to break the wall a fair bit, what with the references to lucasarts and sequals.

If you defecate masonry, that's probably a medical condition.

I remember during the first Max Payne, there's a segment where Max is off his face on a designer drug called Valkyr. He suddenly realises that the reason his life seems to be so packed with stylish and over-the-top violence is - that's right - becasue he's in a video game. Though once he sobers up, he makes no more mention of this, so it's probably just the Valkyr talking.

Eternal Darkness.

Most of the sanity effects were quite mundane, you know, books in the library moving from one shelf to another (pretty sure that's a ghostbusters reference) and the walls bleeding, pretty tame and pretty obvious.

BUT, say if you started to play for quite a long time with the sanity tank drained because you were so unimpressed with these effects.

And say you're just skipping along, when you decide you want to save, pause the game select the save option, the regular dialog box pops up. Except it doesn't say "Saving..."

It says "Deleting...". Complete with progress bar to prolong the anguish. Then "Whoosh!", the game returns to normal to let you know that it was just fucking with you.

It tapped into a very real fear that every gamer possesses.

It brings up an interesting point as well, similar to the Arkham Asylum example. And that is that if a game is trying to get the player to relate to events on screen, like the Bat being infected with fear toxin, the way to achieve this is to stimulate the fears of the player, not the character. Like the fake crash that occurs before the role-reversal intro sequence.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned EarthBound yet. Also Contact on the DS is pretty much nothing but 4th wall breaking.

Have to agree with the MGS ones - especially in the first game. I did almost launch the CD box out of the nearest window when the penny finally dropped, given how long I actually spent wandering around the game looking for the bloody thing.

Prince of Persia - Sands of Time.

When you're climbing up the Library.

Prince: "Maybe there's something in these books that can help us figure out how to stop all this."
Farah: "I don't think this is that kind of game."
Prince: "Did you hear that? She thinks this is a game"

That's my all-time favourite.

Its just a flash game but Mardek 2 has a lot of them.

My favourite being "Oh just to remind you, presing enter opens the Menu"
"Whats a menu?"
"I swear everytime Mardek"
"Oh, um, tally ho"
"Why are we saying Tally Ho? "Because we're heroes!"
Those games are hilarius。

In the original Baten Kaitos, the player manifested as a "guardian spirit" that guides the protagonist Kalas. This leads to many hilarious scenes where everyone looks at the forth wall asked what your opinion on the current situation is.

This becomes particularly awesome at one point in the game where Kalas not only betrays the entire party, but his guardian spirit as well. You read that right, you (the player) get betrayed by your own protagonist. Best plot twist, period.

END SPOILER

I'd definitely go with Eternal Darkness--when the entire premise of the game is breaking the fourth wall to make the player think that they're insane, you deserve a medal.

My runner up/honorable mention would be MGS/MGS4 with the Mantis boss fights.

The boss fight against Psycho Mantis in MGS where in order to hurt him, you need to unplug the controller and plug it in to port 2. Also the bit in the begining where you have to look on the back of the game case to find out the codec fequence to contact Myrel.
I feel sorry for when the future is all emulation and no one can get past this boss fight.

Also, Fable 2 has some great wall breaking, lots of it as well.

I'm surprised that nobody has said Sam and Max yet, the section where putting money into the wishing well and Sam says "I wish this game were over." the screen fades to black before Max tears it down to continue.

I'm going to have to say Deadpool in the X-2 game (forgot the actual title)

Though when I finally make my own Game Discharged, it'll break the 4th wall so hard, it'll have to lock itself in the bathroom with a roll of toothpaste to get the burns and pain to stop...
