Huh, well, I guess they were books from the 80's.

Ingold Inglorion from the Darwath trilogy by Barbara Hambly. Great story and Ingold was a fantastic character. I'd put him up against Gandalf and bet my life savings on him any day.

Of course the two of them would just chuckle a bit at the absurdity of having a fight, make some tea, swap some stories and end as friends for life, so I guess my money'd be safe :D

Edit: forgot to mention that for a very long time, I hoped that BH would put out a prequel trilogy about Ingold's life prior to the trilogy. The references in the trilogy make it sound like it would be a great story. Oh well :(

Either Harry Dresden, the ONLY practicing professional wizard-for-hire, Merlin a historic icon or Harry Potter, just generally cool.

I was waiting for someone to drop a Magic character. But why Jaya? Sure she's awesome and has badass quotes, but what about Urza .

Sure he's a bit stock, but sealing away the satanic god of a race of civilization destroying aliens by putting your eyes in a silver robots chest in order to power up a minotaurs axe and send down heavenly rainbows from the sky has to count for something.
I was trying to think of a more powerful Magic character (Nicol Bolas, actually) but I just find Jaya so amusing that whatever comes out of her mouth as pure one-liner gold...

There're a few... and I think Tezzeret was one, but there was a really old character (back before Invasion) whose name completely eludes me. Definitely blue though...

First of all, planeswalkers and wizards are not one and the same. Sure, some, maybe even most planeswalkers are wizards or can use magic, but there are plenty that are not wizards. Also, the diference between pre-mending and post-mending planeswalkers is huuuuuuuge. Before, they were almost gods, they had almost infinite power, they could create and destroy planets, or relocate entire continents to other worlds almost at will. Now, they are pathetic. Most are barely a bit more powerful than a regular wizard.

Oh, and the blue aligned planeswalker from before the invasion could be Teferi. Was he black (as in african, not black mana aligned) by any chance? If so, then it's Teferi for sure. There were a few others, but they are more obscure.

Also, @HeySeansOnline: Yawgmoth was not satanic. I mean, srsly, he couldn't have been, satan does not exist in the multiverse of Mtg. And the Phyrexians are not aliens, they are human (or were). At their origin they were the Thran, but they changed over time. And i still call bullshit on the death of Yawgmoth. I mean come on that was just so ridiculously forced! Plus, to me he was the single most interesting character in all of mtg, and one of the most interesting i have found in any fictional universe.

All that said, i have to +1 the guy that said Vecna. The guy was a mortal, and he became a god. And almost managed to destroy the universe/gods/make himself omnipotent. I admire that greatly.

PS: All hail the Father of Machines!

Hells Bells man! Harry Dresden takes the cake. Second place goes to Yen Sid. If only cause he has an awesome hat and beard.

Actually lets make a list:

1. Harry Dresden - Zombie t-rex = forever win
2. Yen Sid - Disney backwards
3. Rastlin Majere - Becomes a god, then kills a bunch of them, although he only became a god on a technicality
4. Rand al'Thor - Man chews coal and sh*ts diamonds
5. Fizban - Paladine in disguise makes him more of a god... but he is funny
6. Fistandantalus - Dude never gives up
7. Pretty much any epic level wizard in D&D - Why? One Spell. Wish. End of game.

I'd go with Bayaz, the First of the Magi. If you interrupt his bath, he explodes you.

And if he doesn't meet the qualifications to be called a wizard, then Dresden.

Anomander Dragnipurake, First Son of Mother Dark, Knight of Highhouse dark, Son of Tiam, The Mane of Chaos and slayer of the Elder God Draconus.

Also among his long life he united the remanents of the Tiste Andii, is worshiped as a God, defeated the Seventh Seguleh, unsealed mother dark and other feats.

Also had the coolest death ever.

He's a mage (among other things), not really a wizard but defintly cooler then anyone.

Ben Adaephon Delat (Quick Ben) from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. No contest, to be honest.
Ninjas. Damn.

Honorable mention: The Dominator from The Black Company.
Pft, Anomander Rake is way out of he's league.

Quick Ben's good but couldn't take Icarium when he was in his rage. He did pretty much take out 3 soletaken dragons but that was with undead Hedge. Anomander took on friggen chaos itself after uniting Hood, Draconus, the undead Bridge Burners and hosts of the undead.

He can also turn into a dragon - although i wouldn't be surprised if Quick Ben turned out to be Di'vers or Soletaken.

Also for pure baddass and power I think the Steven Erikson has the best magic characters of anyone mentioned so far.

Edit:

Either (Quick)Ben Aedephon Delat or Tayschrenn from the Malazan book of the fallen. Either has faced down a hundred wizards and warlocks and a few gods both. I could say Kellanved, the malazan emperor, but he has ascended to godhood, so that wouldn't be fair
If you don't count ascendents then yeah, Quick Ben for the win.

I dont know if you'd necessarily consider him a wizard, but I'd say the cleric Pardeux.

If not him... the magic user from Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows of Mysteria. He was beast.

EDIT:

And I guess you could throw Randal Flagg in there.

Harry Mother Fucking Dresden.

Nobody beats him, ever. Gandalf is all well and cool but Harry bests him at every turn at every turn. And lets face it, being a wizard never got Gandalf laid. Harry on the other hand...
This ^^

Seriously, beat a demon, bone a reporter, pen up a magic cop guy that wants your head all in the same night. That and if you don't use a drumstick and hockey stick as wand and staff you're doing it wrong.

When I used the words "satanic" and "alien" it was more for the benefit of those not as familiar with the magic-verse, so if someone else read it they might understand the Legacy Weapon.

Also the planeswalkers now have gotten a downgrade they're still awesome in game. Sure bringing back every dead creature to your side of the field, or bringing a more than likely 20/20 avatar into play isn't as awesome as destroying entire continents, but they're still on an awesome level, and the characters are cool.

Constantine man, he outsmarted the Devil, at least three times. Plus defeated the King of the Vampires while pissed and homeless.

Without the status of sorcerer supreme, I don't even think he's the most powerful magic user in the marvel verse. And if we're taking into account the sorcerer supreme status, then Doom takes it, no contest.

Strange is highly badass though.
Even without the title of Sorceror Supreme, he's no slouch, he may lack the artifacts like the Eye of Agamotto, cape of leviation etc, but he's still got thousands of years of experience of magic experience he gained when fighting with the Vishanti and he knows all of their magic (light, space and time) but still invokes their name out of polite-ness, plus knows how to communicate and exchange magical favours with countless other vast magical beings.

Doom is amazing though because he one of the few character who is a genius scientist and powerful sorceror.
